JUST IN: The Census Bureau's #2030Census Advisory Committee has been terminated by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who oversees the bureau, Arturo Vargas, the committee's chair, confirms to @npr.org. I've reached out to the press offices of the bureau and the Commerce Department for comment...

On Friday night, HHS ordered CDC to take down all flu vaccine campaign materials from its website. Materials are starting to come down. For example, a campaign explaining that flu shot can reduce flu severity from "wild to mild" is now offline. Left image is from Friday, right is now Meanwhile...

It’s time

If it's hitting UIUC already, it's crushing other places. @econroy.bsky.social the lag will catch up real soon like.

Now that DOGE has entered FEMA, I’d like to say something about the importance of alerts and warnings. FEMA has a group called IPAWS, the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System, which is responsible for making sure you get warnings though all sorts of devices, basically for free. 1/

The entire archive of CDC datasets can be found here. HUGE shoutout to data archivists- this work is important 👏🙌🏻 archive.org/details/2025...

This effectively ends all nsf-funded disaster research.

Power outages frequently occur alongside extreme weather events or natural disasters such as wildfires. Research shows that health risks such as gastrointestinal illness & heart attacks also increase. UW SPH's Joan Casey share some things to consider during power outages #PublicHealth

I so clearly remember learning about various insurance issues in grad school (over a decade ago) & being like “hey? It kinda seems like we’re headed towards a situation where insurance kind of collapses & then won’t that collapse the real estate market & then…” www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

How my friends see me when I start venting abt how the LA wildfire could cause more disease outbreaks and why we need to talk more abt mobility injustices

Good fucking luck finding accurate disaster information.

Made some dark chocolate shortbread cookies for the department party 😋 ( and candied cranberries w/ turbinado sugar)

Me: I should work on my project tonight Also me: spent last 4 hours on the Stardew Valley board game (Mentally, I’m super excited about my new projects; physically, I’m so done with 2024🤦🏻‍♀️)

My first national survey study is finally all set and ready to go live👀👀👀

Great comments on the H5N1 study from my colleagues at @scripps.edu showing that a single change at HA 226 plays a key role in host receptor switching. Worth pointing out that we have already seen this mutation in "the wild" - the human case in BC as Dr. Hensley explained: bsky.app/profile/scot...

We’re entering flu season with bird flu raging among US dairy cattle: ~third of CA herds infected. The danger is flu viruses have a trick: they can swap segments —one farmworker co-infected by human and avian flu— to cause pandemics. We may get lucky. I hope so. 🎁🔗 www.nytimes.com/2024/11/29/o...

1/ Influenza wastewater activity levels are currently low across the US, aside from conspicuous areas in CA where #H5N1 is spreading in dairy cows. A deeper dive into the Wastewater Scan data paints a very concerning picture and should add to our sense of urgency.

Something I can look forward to in 2025

Trying to convince our IRB that my study qualifies as exempt 😬😬 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Never have I ever thought I will hear abt Dr. Oz again in this way

Vaccines aren't just lifesaving, they're a basic human right. We must continue doing whatever it takes to protect children around the world from measles and other preventable diseases.

first things first, my super judgmental and talkative child 🐈‍⬛
