We live in a small town close to the coast, the Lost Coast in fact, a place in Northern California where earthquakes strike regularly, sometimes violently. Here there are wildfires and monster floods. The alert systems are not just in case here. They are important tools.

They manage EAS and, the channel I have focused on for the past 10 years, WEA. Wireless Emergency Alerts are the equivalent of a siren in your pocket and they enable emergency managers to reach you without requiring you to sign up (opt in). This is the system that sends AMBER alerts 2/

And it’s really a marvel of public-private coordination. Those cell carriers aren’t mandated to participate but they do. And the alerts that arrive on your phone with seconds or minutes to act can, and have, saved lives. It’s not a partisan thing. It’s about keeping people safe. 4/

I’ve been waiting for a company to take on this task of alerting and we’ve seen Google jump into the fray with their earthquake warnings (it’s very cool - uses the seismometer in the android) and they work internationally. We see lots of weather apps that recycle data from NWS. 7/

I don't know if this is part of WEA, but we had to evacuate in the Palisades bc of the fires. We all got text messages: "Prepare to evacuate"/"All residents have to evacuate".

I guarantee you: lives were saved by these texts. I for example may well have stayed longer had I not gotten the texts.

Two-tier system. Free alerts only go to phones associated with locations/populations Elon would not prefer to cull. If he’d be gratified by your death - say, not white, or you live in California - it’s a monthly fee or nothing. And then if you don’t pay him for it and you die that’s on you.

Better means more personalized or improved geographic accuracy. For instance the Google EEW uses location info in your phone to determine how much shaking you’re likely to feel. WEA EEW cannot do that. It’s one message for the warning polygon.

That’s exactly the point I was trying to explain. You have to SIGN up for and PAY for weather call. It only alerts you for the area you’ve registered for. WEA doesn’t require a sign up and you get the alert if you’re in the area of threat.
