I am extremely sorry to say that my mam, Woolhatwoman/Jean, passed away on the 25th of January. She had come to terms and was quiet, peaceful and comfortable, surrounded by her family and cared for by excellent NHS staff (who had all become immediately fond of her). Woolhatdaughter/Kathryn.

More interesting reading in the @bmj.com on how a combination of geography and circumstance created the Scandinavian society we see today. Higher taxes, in some ways. But a more egalitarian society and a sense of “dugnad” where everyone mucks in and pulls together. Could we do this in Scotland?

Good advice -

not now babe I’m watching the gritter tracker

Good day, Kitchen Inspector here to undertake the first mandatory inspection for 2025 Please be so kind as to let me in so I may cast my murder mittens over the leftover roast potatoes, chicken and gravy

Why do my cats pose for photographs like they’re 18th-century aristocracy?

Tomorrow's Independent front page revealing Brexit's catastrophic cost - five years after the UK left the EU. - New bureaucracy - Weaker UK exports - Labour shortages in key sectors - Less cash for public services - Huge divorce bill - 15% long term hit to UK trade This is the price of populism.

Government should seize the moment, while Musk and Farage are at odds, to close the loophole on foreign donations to UK parties. The danger was always that introducing legislation would trigger a donation. So do it now, before they kiss and make up.

Hello 👋 By way of introduction, wallpapers of two images from the series 'Aurora²', unreleased before now. Both are single-exposure photographs, made in the unique darkness and solitute of remote Scandinavia. Please save and enjoy!

Go carefully, people in the USA where the storm hits -

One cool thing re-reading Livy is how he explains the foundations of Roman temples. To him, most were originally the site of a bubbling spring or ancient oak or sacred grove. Things that later writers would call "Celtic" ideas about people's relationships with their gods.

Happy #Caturday lovely phone family 🐈‍⬛ How is everyone doing? This is something I'm going to try and do much more of in 2025. Whether that's a bit of extra volunteering at my happy place or even a change of job, we shall see... Have a fabulous day and of course always #HaveCourageAndBeKind 🥰

My new year’s resolution generator for @theguardian.com. Let me know what you get!

As others including Carole Caddwaladr have flagged, X/Elon Musk has registered a new UK company Having a UK company (which is trading) is essential to being able to donate to a UK party Could be other reasons, but the timing is a significant red flag...

This sounds like fun, if you're in the USA

Some of the effectiveness of hospice care comes from its strong local links, and from connecting to ‘people’ many years before they become ‘patients’.

100% facts,

Just remembered this For those citing C4's Swiped as 'proof' of the dangers of phones Many relevant experts (myself included) who offered to explain the nuanced, evidence-based reality were in discussions beforehand We were all ultimately ignored The 'findings' of the show were an active choice

. Bach to the future...

We had a lovely walk this afternoon. I called it a “hike” on Strava because I wore my boots, even though we just went out of the front door and along the road a bit to the Braid Hills. Lots of ice underfoot, but the Pentland Hills were looking magnificent in the snow. #Edinburgh #VisitScotland

Newspapers die in cowardice.

Musk is claiming so many people and places are pedophiles, so I begin to wonder if he is projecting.

Just imagine him bounding along after you, barping

Worth a repost…

We live in hope. Cleaning it up would be good though.

Great take as ever from @garwboy.bsky.social “where the majority of children own a smartphone, then if a chunk of that population ends up requiring mental healthcare, then the majority…will also own a smartphone. It does not logically follow that smartphones are the cause of mental health issues”
