If you're planning a Q&A, plant a friend in the audience to ask a first question, just in case. Sometimes you'll open up the room to the crowd & they'll just stare at you in silent terror—they all have questions, but no one wants to go first. Having a ringer can't hurt!

Fascinating & dispiriting story. Personal resonance for me: my mom was born during WWII into the same community, in a neighboring town. Mom's middle name, to honor her grandmother, is spelled Marie—but Nonna's name was Maria. Am now wondering if that was to protect Mom from midwar anti-Italian bias!

10 years ago stage IV melanoma is a death sentence. Now it’s curable. Thanks to NIH funded, Nobel prizing winning research. Thousands of fathers, mothers, daughters, sons, grandparents, friends, neighbors are alive because of this.

Still swarms of quakes in the last couple days, & after yesterday's 5.2, the Greek government declared a state of emergency. Seismologists can't yet say whether the quakes are a sign of a big one building, or of tectonic tension being relased & the danger easing. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...
