I truly can't imagine getting any of my adult self esteem or ideology from a weird test most people take in grade school.

The nativists of the 1840s thought immigrants formed a vast conspiracy to undermine American democracy. They promoted far-fetched misinformation about immigrants. They believed that immigrant men preyed on American women. They believed that immigrants were poisoning the blood of America. 🧵🗃️

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

I'm happy to let the RW have Sparta -- a miserable society mostly famous for losing a battle and who's only major victory happened to be against a nation-state badly weakened by a RW tyrant who'd hollowed out the treasury and coalition.

Ever notice how a certain Type of Guy is really into ancient Sparta? I looked at how the Spartans have been interpreted — and misinterpreted — throughout history, including how they became role models for some of the worst political movements in history. 🗃️ open.substack.com/pub/worldhis...

This is how almost everyone who works on climate feels almost all the time. 🤷‍♀️

Might I just say: Djed Motherfucking Spence

In the late 1800s, a remarkable development promised to liberate women around the world. One suffragist said that “I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance.” 🗃️🧵

There's a Crisis of Masculinity in this country and the only way to solve it is to let me act like a cross between a baby and a movie villain

the single most un-american and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an american president

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

Folks: I am NOT affiliated with the group that is using my name to support an economic boycott. Please spread this post, if you would.

Reposting this for no particular reason. 👀

I don't even really know how to put this in words but one of the signal experiences of the last decade is being confronted, over and over again, with how *weak* this country is. How hollow. There was so much less substance to it, to its leaders & institutions, than anyone thought.

Lord knows I’m not a constitutional scholar not even a lawyer (and I’ve yet to check in with @kateshaw.bsky.social) but a legal regime in which “you can do crimes if you’re buddies with the president or praise him publicly” is *on its face* a violation the equal protection of the laws.

You are not powerless, and he is not unstoppable. Look at, and learn from, the funding freeze and how quickly he was forced to surrender.

Love history and I love biking on my old lady bike. Yup I have a basket

Annie Londonderry wanted to travel around the world on a bike. She didn't quite succeed (it’s more accurate to say she traveled around the world with a bike), but in the process, she became a sensation and a bit of a folk hero. 🗃️🧵

You may have missed it, but Donald Trump recently announced that he wants to use Guantanamo as a detention camp. It’s fitting, really — Guantanamo has long been an avatar of American imperialism and impunity. 🗃️ open.substack.com/pub/worldhis...

this is very clear and very straightforward about what's happening and at some point we also have to start pointing the finger at major news organizations who are flatly - out of bias, out of fear, out of incompetence, whatever - refusing to treat this as the emergency it is do your jobs

Five years ago today, I was in Belarus, where I saw shiny malls, trendy bars, and a growing tech industry—and heard many stories about the broken political system, jailed dissidents, and deeply corrupt, unpopular dictator. These things can and do coexist. Randomly thinking about that today.

Am I having a stroke or did Trump just talk about the US “owning” Gaza? And maybe sending US troops?

People are getting up off the mat.

Raskin: "Elon Musk, you may have illegally seized power over the financial payments systems of the Treasury, but you don't control the money of the American people. The US Congress does that under Article 1 of the Constitution ... we don't have a fourth branch of government called 'Elon Musk'"

look I’m no messaging expert but it seems like the American people might be interested to know that Donald Trump just gave our social security numbers to a teen called BigBalls

1/I understand legit debate re: #DEI & whether pendulum swung too far, too quickly. But what happened today at @NSAGov's @NatCryptoMuseum is unacceptable. Trump Admin new DEI policy disgraces cryptological historical trailblazers & icons in community. See two covered areas? https://

I think Americans, blessed with relatively stable government for a long time, assume there is someone, some adult, who will step in and make things right before the President does anything REALLY bad. There’s not.
