Laptop jobs are better because of pay, autonomy, and respect, not anything innate to the form of labor. If you only look at the actual tasks involved (minus management attitude, customer behavior, low pay) I much preferred stocking shelves. Under socialism I would use computers for fun times only

My 100th birthday... in prison? - This is abuse.

Let's all get together and chuck Schumer

people who are like has a county every come back from civic imparement so large its like no not in its original form but like who wants that back? we shouldn't have accelerationisted it but let's not pretend we were in a good spot.

even if we pretend for a moment that the normal, "civil" state of things was acceptable, you clearly cannot "return to normalcy" by stubbornly Doing Normalcy and hoping everyone just decides to join you

at the used bookstore the other day and found a copy of Ethan Frome where someone had written "that's so sad" and "so sad for Frome" on the very last page

The law banning the clock app and the precedent the supreme court set are a big deal. I wouldn't be flippant about it, but that doesn't mean it's surprising. This was always going to happen when things got serious. It'll keep escalating from here. It's frustrating to see people so unprepared

Part of the joy of Lynch was that he delighted in not letting the audience understand it. It's why "(laughs, does not answer)" and "elaborate on that" "no" became memes. He knew how to create memorable images and leave greater narratives aside.

oh you think its funny that 300 iq males are crashing their teslas & being cooked alive by some weird type of fire thats immune to firemen

STEM is so cool. Science is amazing. Kids should develop curiosity about how the universe works and proficiency in uncovering its secrets, so that they can most effectively optimize clickthrough rates on banner ads at the bottom of VC-funded website-apps.

I jotted this down from the jazz critic Mark Stryker at some point, and I still think it covers the critical bases, as it were

Thinking about starting a substack that's like Why All Our Problems Are The Fault Of People With No Power and making 9 million dollars

I'm sure it depends on the group and area but my commie reading group experience has been that the people in them are usually also involved in a variety of other orgs/projects. People who only do the book club seem to get pulled into something else eventually, often through those connections.

So many posts like "I see why AI is bad for writing, but it's indispensable for code" and I really disagree... While I'm sure it puts out better code than prose, every use case I can think of would be harder than figuring it out myself or using tools we *already have*, at least in the long run.

there's literally zero reason to use spotify. you can just go to bandcamp and buy music and then just listen to it

actually that’s the name of the doctor. you’re thinking of pagliacci’s monster

doctor: "go see pagliacci" patient: "yeah, i uh.. i keep hearing rumors that you're pagliacci. under all the makeup, it's you" doctor: "no" patient: "because it seems like you just keep recommending this so people will go to your shows" doctor: "it is my medical opinion that you go see pagliacci"

I mean preferably one simply wouldn't condescend to me at all, but if you're going to then you're not allowed to also be stupider than me. This is not a high bar, I am not making a big ask of you here.

If i was the richest guy in the world i would just do stuff like give the decemberists 100 million dollars to write a concept album about the hardy boys

(Me, genius) I will do this task later when it’s less convenient

there's got to be a sweet spot for giving out personal information as an anonymous account where someone COULD figure out your real identity but they wouldn't be able to really prove it. Like if you went "? that's not me" everyone in real life would believe you

Book pages should be numbered backwards so we’re always counting down how many pages we have left
