It works, but won't outright prevent thermal shock.
Thermal shock happens because there's a big temperature gap between the cup & water, so if you have a metal spoon in there, it'll help conduct heat to the glass + cool any water that splashes off the spoon.

My personal favorite is the Clockwork Reliquary one from Shattered Star. It's older, but having the little skeleton in the translucent center is a really cool touch.
