Very good advice to find after a day of doomscrolling

If people are out there funding 3-5m games let me know, because as far as I can see right now, there's less than 10 partners. There's simply no money

I watched the closing seconds of the 1998 NBA finals over two dozen times and it’s impossible for me, a reporter for the New York Times, to say whether or not Michael Jordan made the game winning shot. The gesture, bizarre yet familiar, appears to many spectators to have involved a basketball,

I see things like "but we have so much media that depicts Nazis as the bad guy" and I'm just sitting here thinking... I think we storytellers vastly overestimate how much fiction can influence people. Like stories are important but the message will be lost on many people.

"Masculine Energy"

How to spend today

ain't that a mood

Today and in the coming days, remember

Go make the art you’ve always wanted to make. Write the stories you’ve been dreaming of. Sing your heart out. Pick up an instrument & play. Do the things you’ve been holding back on because you’re worried about what others might think. Just do it. Do it now. Life is short. Life is precious. Please.

if you're posting shit about punching nazis or whatever, i implore that you actually go and do something material for the vulnerable communities impacted and threatened by these new laws. advocate. donate. be there for people. i don't care. just don't posture online and move on the next day.

They cant get my data if i am Fully Dissolved in a bath tub full of sodium hydroxide

With very few exceptions, Games as a Service is only a temporarily sustainable model in the AAA space. Stop trying to make them last forever and give them a lifecycle with a dedicated endpoint, which can accelerate based on subscriber churn. Have your next game in pre-production, and pivot early.

2024 currently has more known games industry layoffs than 2023+2022 combined. 2024 is roughly 600 layoffs away from doubling 2023. There is still plenty of business days left in the month. I can't emphasize enough how extreme these last few years have been. So far.

Robocop is a movie about a guy who gets killed on the job and they still made him go back to work

In case any of my fellow creatives also needed this reminder:

feeling punchy about Holiday shit tonight so friendly reminder that the concept of “true love”/soulmates is one of the most toxic cultural inventions there has ever been! broken so many young brains. just find someone you’re comfortable with and work your asses off about the rest of it

As I get older, life seems to repeatedly re-affirm the lesson that nothing gets addressed or fixed for you. Hoping it does is like playing the lottery. You really do (unfortunately) have to do / build it yourself. And mostly the process is neither easy nor fun.

since this will always be circulating, i might as well be the first one to put it here: the stretch tips i made many years ago… remember to stop and stretch and take care of your hands! be mindful of your work time & listen to your body.

My body was a Temple— it’s mostly crumbling ruins at this point, though. Remnants of a former civilization.

The background art from Batman: The Animated Series taking absolutely zero prisoners.

Sending big love to everyone who experiences Thanksgiving as emotional torture and pain, and/or deep, deep loneliness. And/or profound grief. You’re not alone. And I see you. So do a lot of other people here. ❤️

For those going home to visit family this weekend: • Samsung calls it Auto Motion Plus • LG calls it TruMotion • Sony calls it Motionflow • Roku calls it Action Smoothing • Google TV calls it Motion Enhancement • Vizio calls it Smooth Motion Effect.

Trump ate shit on one of the very first things he tried (the Gaetz nomination) before he even took office again he will do enormous damage but he is not invincible and the more friction we can put in his way the less he will do it is what it is now, fighting back is the only viable option

What bugs me about the intentional devaluing of art by tech is that almost anyone can actually learn how to art. Like, it takes time, and failures abound, but the myth that some people just pop out of the womb with a can or can't stamped on their heads is a crock.

In politics clarity is its own opportunity. The storm of the 2024 election has created great clarity. The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, and 3rd richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos, are currently asking a group of Trump judges to end the right to organize & join a union in the United States.

the reality of things right now is that the institutions which are meant to protect us are doing nothing, while a group called something like "Da Cum Goblinz" raises eye watering amounts of money for direct action

on both a personal level and a broader cultural one, what most excites me is the idea of building something new. that's what I want to do, and what I want to be a part of. reruns, flagging institutions, temporary bandaids, it feels like we've been in an era of not letting things die that should

This hit my weak point for massive damage

I don’t brag about this enough bc it feels gauche, but whatever—I turned down a six figure deal from Substack because I thought they were slimy

This what MLK’ s daughter has suggested we do. Great list.

I briefly put principles and values aside to make a saltier, crankier case for leaving X: Elon Musk is uniquely insufferable holapapi.substack.com/p/x-out

I don't know who needs to read this but: Don't worry, nearly everyone in video games is struggling right now. It's not just you. Even the big names are having sleepless nights. I have no magic answers for you, but it's at least nice to know we're all riding the same rough seas

If you struggle with math and linear algebra, which is very useful for game development; this website is excellent to learn, interactive examples to learn Vectors, matrix, dot product. immersivemath.com/ila/index.html #gamedev #math

Getting a lot of replies along the lines of "oh, you rube, you still think the law matters" and it feels strategically foolish to just concede that it doesn't. Contest everything. Expose the hypocrisy.

I've been seeing a lot of pixel artists struggle with Bluesky's image compression, so I'd thought I'd share how to get clear, crisp pixels on the site! Share to help a fellow pixel-artist! #pixelart #tutorial

I get frustrated with the idea that creative pursuits like writing and art are generally considered “passions” and not “jobs”, cuz that’s how the world sets them up to be underfunded & underappreciated, and still act like they’re doing creators a favor by paying for it. We are tradespeople. Period.

"does this game sell" "does that game sell" bitch, the fuck do you care. Half the best games ever made "failed to meet expectations". Shadow of the Colossus? Alien Isolation? Mirror's Edge? Is yer joy based on first week sales?? Stop doing free PR for corporations and start respecting artists

“When somebody hurts you, tell them. When somebody steps on your toes, let them know that they stepped on your toes. See how they react. They'll tell you who they are.” Essential reading as always. Mox’s essays are so very much worth your time.

Rule #1

As an artist who went to a fine arts college I quickly learned the Arts is not welcoming to working class/lower income folks But as high brow as it wants to be, the industry doesn’t get a say in whether you are an artist or not. You’re still a creative if you say you are, no matter how you got here

Good morning, beautiful people. Time for a Special Announcement! @majorarlene.bsky.social and I are teaming up to host the first-ever Bluesky Map Jam! Are YOU interested in making blue themed Doom maps? If so, then check out the Doomworld thread. (1/2) www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/...
