Over 10 years, the Initiative has engaged in a range of academic and cultural activities—giving fellowships to grad students & scholars, supporting literary translation, & realizing events like the Art of the Benshi World Tour and Blue Moon Over Memphis, an English-language noh play.

In 2014, a $2.5 million gift established the Yanai Initiative as a partnership of UCLA & Waseda University. In 2020 Yanai gave $25 million to endow the Initiative—then the largest donation ever to UCLA Humanities. This new donation breaks that record. newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/25-...

The World of the Benshi catalog contains specially photographed images, captured at 1200 DPI for printing. They therefore have high resolution details unable to be seen anywhere else. 😮 This beautiful book will be the perfect gift for any film enthusiast! yanai-initiative.ucla.edu/publication/...
