Contra the usual gaudy Qing ceramics, here is the Kangxi Emperor’s favorite rouge glaze: 胭脂紅. Palace medical records noted that Kangxi (1654-1722) was cured of his depression (after his favorite son’s death) by red wine, brought to him by a Jesuit missionary. Hence the commemorative wine-red glaze.
