A bit of sci-fi worldbuilding that i think is really neat is in Tanya Huff's Confederation series. The protagonists are all marines or ex-marines, but they're space marines in what is basically the United Federation of Planets - and when they are shown a pistol for the first time, they're HORRIFIED.
