I will never forget the photo of Zelenskyy’s face after he saw Russia’s war crimes in Bucha in 2022. He seemed to age years in an afternoon. Watching him constantly cross the world asking for aid that should have been thrown at him is one of the deepest shames of our age.

That's literally all Ukrainians now

i sustained truly unprecedented levels of psychic damage while repotting from and writing about cpac so you better read this, thanks! www.theverge.com/policy/62089...

the thing about claims that USAID is just a cover for imperialism is that currying favor with aid which is secretly harmful is like faking the moon landing using a soundstage which is actually on the moon

China’s defence ministry warns Taiwan ‘we will get you, sooner or later’

Kyrgyzstan's President orders officials to spend between 3% and 8% of their regional share of the reserve fund to protect towns, villages and critical infrastructure from mud slides Due to climate change, Kyrgyzstan has seen an exponential increase in mud slides in recent years

#Tajikistan heads into a parliamentary election this weekend that will cement Rahmon's decade-long eradication of political opposition - and potentially prime the country for a dynastic succession. My latest for The Economist www.economist.com/asia/2025/02...

The city council of a mid-size town in Saxony votes to ban advertisements for the German military thanks to cooperation between the AfD and the BSW

This is truly devastating news, not only for scholars and scientists, but also for the United States as a great power with global influence. Senseless, heartless, cowardly, and stupid.

Two physicist-researchers sentenced to 8 months for throwing explosives at the Russian consulate general in Marseille The two justified their actions by saying that they couldn't "stay by with all the insane abuses in the world" Are we entering a new era of nerdy resistance fighters?

the dismantling of US foreign aid is starting to hit very close to home. Dear friends left without a job, unable to pay mortgages, childcare, entire livelihoods destroyed. The ripple effects of this are just insane.

OC Media has been a crucial resource for coverage of the Caucasus, and is emblematic of the kind of knowledge we are going to lose through this insane assault on foreign assistance

I was waiting for this to happen, but still hurts to see. I learned Uzbek thanks to this unique summer language program. No other country in the world offers this kind of language learning opportunities - and it's been just torpedoed

a huge blow to independent media in the Caucasus

With the US Antarctic program in limbo, scientists say foreign countries are "actively recruiting" their colleagues & students. "People have been coming [to the US] to do science my whole life. Now people are going the other way.” Make America Great Again! www.wired.com/story/doge-a...

the flip side of this means that US citizens who aren’t engaged in crimes - say journalists or human rights activists - should no longer count on the US to get them out of foreign jails

Hello, #CentralAsia / #EasternEurope / #Caucasus / #Balkans! Fellows at Transitions are looking for those who lost funding following the #USAID + suspension. If you have a moment for them: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

two erstwhile ideological Cold War adversaries and the world’s biggest nuclear powers converging into allied fascist regimes makes for a great film plot line, but is an absolutely terrifying reality

worrying signs that Die Linke may continue its pacifist approach to Ukraine and vote against any additional arm shipments really hoping for there to be an internal shift on the matter given the downward spiral in Washington, but am not too optimistic www.zeit.de/politik/deut...

Reading through @lioneltrolling.bsky.social brilliant book on the rise of the wacko far-right in the 1990s in the US, it’s interesting to see some of the parallels with Russia (the ties between David Duke and Dugin are mentioned for example)

I'm sorry, I don't know how you can describe the Clinton era and the Trump era as two manifestations of "neo-liberalism"

amidst all the completely misinformed takes on what's happening in the US across most of Russian-language media, it's refreshing to see @ericamarat.bsky.social set the record straight on Trump and Musk's assault on American democracy in this great podcast with Esimde youtu.be/oGkQC7s8uT8?...

that's why I have a hard time seeing all the smug "this is the true face of American hegemony" from some corners of the left

I don't think you can look at what is brewing in Washington right now and just assume that the US will still be a functioning geopolitical actor this time next year

the inhumane crackdown on freedom of expression continues unabated in Kyrgyzstan

my younger brother is on Medicaid and honestly if this goes through we’ll have to think about relocating him abroad

Absolutely despicable: Kyrgyzstan’s Supreme Court denies the appeal in the case of imprisoned female media director Makhabat Tazhibek kyzy and her journalist colleague Azamat Ishenbekov, leaves both Temirov Live newsroom staffers in jail despite the lack of any credible evidence in the case

All these essays explaining voters’ “legitimate concerns” and no mention of the terrifying daily realities of migrants who move to those voters’ neighbourhoods, improve their existences with their labour, and are rewarded with regular threats and violence against their person and their property.

Called the ongoing Trump/Musk rampage a coup in my first ever article in Russian for Republic, a liberal news media now in exile Feel free to share with any Russian speakers you know who are confused about what’s happening in the US republic.ru/posts/115093

my talented friend painted this picture of Samarkand for me - and I couldn’t ask for a better birthday gift 🫶

Pretty dire map in Saxony where the AfD wins all but one district in Leipzig. AfD captures Dresden (used to be CDU) and Leipzig’s Northern I district (also CDU) No longer a city vs. countryside story in Saxony

The young vote in Germany, by gender. 😳

If you considered posting something critical of the Trump regime but then decided against due to fear for retaliation, then you are no longer living in a democracy.

with tomorrow’s election in Germany, I’ve been thinking a lot about the transgressive appeal of fascism, not as a coherent ideology, but as a form of gratifying sabotage. Talking to AfD supporters in East Germany, what I came away with weren’t actual grievances but a kind of giddiness

Good piece, @adamtooze.bsky.social, on Germany’s small-bore election campaign and the missed opportunity for a proper debate on the need to “upgrade and update its hitherto successful economic, technological and strategic model to face new challenges”. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-...
