New work art for @88films.bsky.social Takashi Miike's🦓ZEBRAMAN & ZEBRAMAN 2 ATTACK ON ZEBRA CITY Making artwork for release of The Zebraman films was a lot of fun. Massive thank you to @jaspersharp.bsky.social for being a joy to work with as always Coming on June 23rd on Blu-ray in the UK

have watched most of zatoichi tv series. started S4 + worked back. storytelling is far more interesting later on, but locations + direction more varied earlier on. still a great character that presents lots of opportunities. odd use of small children. lots of saucy women. copious death. justice.

a few lengthy cinema viewings recently. 'seven samurai' 4K via BFI, with piss poor + patchy subtitles. definitely not the ones toho had done for it by don brown. 'the brutalist', dull as dishwater + uneventful oscar bait. 'the seed of the sacred fig' worth pondering, still hard to justify runtime.

No matter where they send him, black marketeer Ueda (Hiroki Matsukata) won’t let prison walls stop him. Here's our brand new trailer for THE RAPACIOUS JAILBREAKER, released this May

Publishing next month, SEMISHIGURE by Shuhei Fujisawa (tr. Thomas Harper) is the samurai novel which has captivated generations of Japanese readers. It was adapted into an award-winning movie by Mitsuo Kurotsuchi. 🎬 Promotional stills from the movie, directed by Mitsuo Kurotsuchi.

Out 17th February from Third Window Films - Scent of a Spell (魔性の香り, Toshiharu Ikeda, 1985)

The latest 3 films in our Directors Company series are now out on bluray & digital! Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s BUMPKIN SOUP ドレミファ娘の血は騒ぐ Toshiharu Ikeda’s MERMAID LEGEND 人魚伝説 and SCENT OF A SPELL 魔性の香り buff.ly/4emJvas

kazuya shiraishi's 'bushido' uses Go as a bond between friends + battle ground between enemies, later more literally. lacks a little clarity over game rules not familiar with many, but compensates somewhat with dialogue that explains a player's style show their respective character inherently.

although shiraishi's 'bushido' is touring UK via TJFTFP, doesn't appear certified by BBFC yet? wonder if it will get wider release; ditto his '11 rebels' too. reminded me most of 'sword of desperation' which production style + story structure. liked it a lot www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emob...

"A fantastic gem that deserves to be seen by more people and recommended widely." Toshiharu Ikeda's MERMAID LEGEND 人魚伝説 reviewed @nerdlyuk.bsky.social www.nerdly.co.uk/2025/02/12/m... Out on bluray Monday!

Arrow's Toei V-cinema box set is here! Been working on this for much of the past months, producing all the interviews and making my visual essay. I originally recommended these nine titles and am very glad Arrow picked them all up. Good times ahead! www.arrowfilms.com/blu-ray/v-ci...

"Nobody's Boy Remi" anime series by Osamu Dezaki (1977) is coming on Blu-ray (USA). Japanese audio + english subs (also includes French language dub). Preorders >> amzn.to/4jkr5uu

i will be seeing kazuya shiraishi's 'bushido' at the cinema here in the UK thanks to JFTFP; i've seen very few this way (... 13 assassins), due to various access issues over many years. would also have seen ichikawa's 'inugami family' but timing too close for me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emob...

My letter in today's Guardian. Just asking, like. But I think we know the answer.

2025 is going to be a big year for us - including our first UHD releases! 💿 We've got several titles confirmed with potentially more on the horizon. Any guesses what they might be?

Another fresh update with Shujei Fujisawa's Semishigure (trans. Thomas Harper), a classic work of samurai historical fiction. These novels haven't usually made it into English. With a fresh (+ unabridged!) translation of Eli Yoshikawa's Musashi also coming this spring, is that about to change?

Increasing the number of Masumura films out there in the English speaking world. With essay by Earl Jackson, commentary by @annekmck.bsky.social and me, and a very exhaustive to camera intro to the film by Mark Roberts. www.arrowfilms.com/blu-ray/play...

eiichi kudo however, i'd like to see more from. having seen his '13 assassins', i'm surprised it hasn't reappeared. the filmography is long, with lots of possible interest. more eighties films will always be appreciated. not sure how that decade played out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDCq...

eiichi kudo's 'yokohama bj blues', which i fear needs more study + explanation than i'd like to undertake, is fine as something of a noir. i'm familiar with matsuda, have few preconceived ideas to smash. i've little experience of the eighties output of japan. the plot may be familiar to some.

lots of familiar director's, actors here too on zatoichi tv episodes. ishibashi renji turns up a couple of times. notable as the yakuza who loses his fingers to zatoichi's strictness with hospitality rules when using hospitality of local clans. also, 'the winter sea' episode with mieko harada.

oddest zatoichi tv moment in the episodes i've watched so far; sat beside rough yakuza guy who is having his way with lady of the night, he is asked, "are you sure you can't see anything?" to which zatoichi replies, "i can only perceive the smell".

... as for how zatoichi works on tv, it's even more stripped back than the regular run of films. the seventies vibe is quite trippy at times, especially thanks to the music, which is a mix of recycled and not. fascinated by the subtitles, which seem automatically generated and largely very workable.

zatoichi tv series is on tubi. unsure of the legality, assuming someone has told rupert murdoch if it's off. also on youtube. it's far away from the days of old, when you might dream of this, but it's also far further to go to get a decent range beyond this particular picked cherry.

We're delighted to announce our edition of THE EEL will showcase the extended 135m cut overseen by Imamura in 2004 and very rare outside of Japan. We're excited to share this special Blu-ray world premiere with you all.

Japanese & crime film lovers: don't sleep on the innocuous (and nonsensically) sounding CASH CALLS HELL, just announced on Blu from @filmmovement.bsky.social through OCN/VS. Never before on video in the US, it's Hideo Gosha's third feature film, a spectacular, tight, gritty crime drama starring 1/
