I just reposted an old Tides episode on peasants’ rebellions and resistance, but basically: work slowdowns, playing dumb, demanding explicit instructions for every task, not showing up, public shaming

Theodore Roosevelt, 1918:

these people are hopeless. i hope they all get tea partied next year

You know what would be really cool? A system of government where the whims of the head of state could be constrained by some kind of parliament or legislature, or there were some kinds of “checks” or “balances” that ensured that one person didn’t simply get to dictate how the government worked

Millennials are a goldilocks generation raised in the narrow window between leaded gasoline and social media and hooooo boy is that showing these days

He’s the president

It would be good if the UK canceled Trumps visit. He’s an international pariah and a source of shame to all upstanding Americans

“We have to meet REAL Americans where they’re at: gun shows and tailgates” - these are the words of completely insular bloodsuckers whose strategy for political communication is to imagine the dumbest yokel they can, and then try to imagine how to talk down to that person

This week on the blog! Who needs siege camps? We continue our look at the hot mess that is Rings of Power's Siege of Eregion. Adar's siege works are a jumbled, useless mess that makes his army more vulnerable, not less: but what would useful siege works look like? acoup.blog/2025/02/28/c...

"He was a young man and ghosty stories about the tall hills didn't scare him none. He was looking for a Hawken gun, .50 caliber or better. He settled for a .30, but damn, it was a genuine Hawken... you couldn't go no better."

TRUMP TAKE EGG.

we may be one of the few pubs that got this headline right Trump And Vance Ambush Zelensky In Prelude To Betrayal talkingpointsmemo.com/news/trump-a...

Mitch is one of the singular villains of American history, personally responsible for the destruction of our democracy and our government at a level above anyone save Trump himself he is a vile man on the level of John Calhoun and should be remembered as such

My review of Lawrence Keppie's Slingers and Sling Bullets is out at BMCR (bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2025/2025.02...) It's always nice to be able to review something that one can easily give a very positive review to; this is a topic that was in need of a compact, focused treatment and now it has one.

Oh yes, Homer’s famous “Tes Thdpssssps.” 👍🏻

gravedigger of american democracy. a more malign influence than john c calhoun.

Here in Illinois, ten years ago we saw the consequences of a rampant ideological gutting of government. It genuinely harmed people. Our citizens hated it. Trust me – I was elected based in part on just how much they hated it.

No, but if you’re looking for one, I am aware of a guy you work with that was indicted four times and convicted of thirty-four felonies.

There's a mindset that goes "Trump's authoritarianism is a distraction from his corruption which is a distraction which is a distraction from his policy agenda which is a distraction from egg prices which is a distraction from his authoritarianism." It's an excuse not to act. Attack all of it.

Dem base: "Oh my god, Trump is acting like a king! Please raise the alarm!" Democrats: "Too complicated. No way to explain this to normie voters." Dem base: "OH MY GOD HE LITERALLY JUST CALLED HIMSELF A KING" Democrats: "A distraction. We should talk about the complicated policy stuff."

This is an actual congressman, someone with the power and the platform to raise hell around what’s happening, and he’s missing the most fundamental opportunity to build a concrete, easy-to-grasp message. “The president isn’t a king” is being handed to you on a platter!

What a shame. Teamsters deserve better than this.

Go ahead. Let the people see you for what you are.

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

trump took egg

This thing seems to me to be most relevant: right now there are embarrassingly large chunks of the center and center-right telling themselves paper-thin feel-good stories about how this will all work out, because the alternative is the soul-crushing realization that they've enabled a tyrant.

This is something I've been thinking about for a long time, though it went in some unexpected directions. A comparison of UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (1991) and NEMESIS (2002) and what they say about Star Trek, American culture, and the End of History.

the single most un-american and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an american president

Discworld QOTD, from A Hat Full Of Sky "Even if it's not your fault, it's your responsibility."

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

Everyone is wrong about why Dem "messaging" sucks. It's not that it's not "simple" enough, or that it's not focused enough on this or that. It's that they are not engaging in the politics of the day. They're floating above it. They don't respond to things, and when they do respond, it's boilerplate.

When’s the Democratic Tea Party start? Where do I sign up? Can I toss Chuck Schumer into Boston Harbor?

I'm posting some of my old Tides of History intro scenes. They're short examples of sociological storytelling, trying to humanize large-scale trends over time through an individual's perspective. First one: A day in the life of an Archaic Greek woman, c. 770 BC open.substack.com/pub/patrickw...
