a recurring thought (s/o to @alixabeth.bsky.social) is how much *time* this administration is collectively wasting forcing people to do things, taking away things, reversing things, harming people, making people drop what they’re doing to mitigate said harms, etc.

“These reinstatements show us that legal action still has the power to hold the federal government accountable to its obligations.” 🎤

"I would not have dared to dream that metastatic melanoma would become a treatable disease in my lifetime. Yet here we are today, with 43% of people diagnosed with metastatic melanoma living 10 years or more, due to treatments that we broadly refer to as cancer immunotherapy." Barry P. Sleckman, UAB

This is a really excellent summary of the current issues, including the consequences for those who work at NIH, scientists embarking on their careers, patients involved in clinical trials, and scientific advancements in this country. It’s all bleak, and they didn’t really sugarcoat it.

Thrilled to be at the CHI conference this week where PhD student @schafer.bsky.social will present our paper — co-authored w/ Rachel Moran (1st author) & @mertcanbayar.bsky.social — titled, "The End of Trust and Safety?" dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

My full statement on cuts to scientific research at the National Science Foundation👇

In the past month 4 trainees in my lab lost: NIH diversity supplement, MARC, & STEP-Up funding. NSF SBE meeting (incl. ECRs) indefinitely postponed. Pipeline cuts disproportionately affect underrepresented scholars. Individual lives & our collective future impacted. #ScienceMatters

A powerful call has just gone up on the website of the @aacu.org : “A Call for Constructive Engagement” signed by almost 200 college & university presidents (more sure to join), from community colleges to R1s! #academicsky #edusky @academic-chatter.bsky.social www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

BOOM: Harvard sues Trump administration. Defendants include the agency heads of NIH, NSF, Dept of Ed, DOE, DoD, NASA, GSA, and...DOJ (Pam Bondi). Full compliant here: www.harvard.edu/research-fun... NYT summary (gift): www.nytimes.com/2025/04/21/u...

The pope was a strong advocate for the poor and the environment and a towering figure on the world stage, addressing not just Catholics but the men and women of our time.

To put things in context: Three weeks ago, it felt like every institution was folding. Like nobody was standing up except the American people, like we were calling our representatives and nothing was happening.

If you’re comfortable, here’s a form to submit info on terminated NSF grants for greater collective transparency and insight among grantees: Kudos to @scott-delaney.bsky.social for putting together. airtable.com/appGKlSVeXni...

My NSF CS for All grant was just terminated (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...). Nationwide, we were: • Improving the quantity + quality of K-12 CS teachers • Ensuring the sustainability of K-12 CS teacher prep programs • Ensuring all youth in the U.S. have access to great CS teachers

“The National Science Foundation (NSF) has spent decades—and billions of dollars—trying to attract more women and members of underrepresented groups into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Not anymore. Today NSF announced such efforts “are no longer aligned with its priorities”

Here's a copy of an NSF grant termination notice that went out today. "NSF is issuing this termination to protect the interests of the government pursuant...on the basis that they no longer effectuate the program goals or agency priorities." Not subject to appeal. #HigherEd #AcademicSky

This should be the template for every university’s website: let the public know what they gain from research and what they stand to lose. www.harvard.edu

After a short era in which people questioned the value of academia in ML, its value is more obvious than ever. Big labs stopped publishing the minute commercial incentives showed up and are relentlessly focused on a singular vision of scaling. Academia is a meaningful complement, bringing... 1/2

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

Exclusive: Researchers at the US National Institutes of Health were told they can't attend scientific conferences and meetings without official permission, even if they pay their way and go during time off, current and former NIH scientists told Reuters reut.rs/4j7rFLT

Busy week at LUC presenting our research results and celebrating diversity! #BullyBlocker #NSFfunded

🧪 Time for a full status update at NSF! Let's look via four lenses: (1) New awards: 🚨 About 50% lower since Jan 20 (2) Future funding: 🚨🚨 Major uncertainty -- action alert! (3) Active awards: 🟡🟢 Ok relative to other agencies...? (4) Staff reductions: 🟡🚨 Some with 28% RIFs coming

I hope other university alliances start pooling resources and engaging in the kinds of collective action Rutgers is proposing here for the Big Ten. senate.rutgers.edu/report/resol...

Still enraged they cut the NIH Bridges programs. 13 students in my lab came as CC students through Bridges. Students who had little/no support or guidance before. They could now be in lab instead of needing to make ends meet off-campus. Most are now in PhD progs (incl GRFP awardees) or applying. 1/2

The #HandsOff rally in Chicago is packed!

BREAKING: We're suing the National Institutes of Health over their politically-motivated purge of research grants. This is an unlawful attack on scientific progress that puts lives at risk.

The bloodbaths at IMLS (Institute of Museum and Library Services) and NEH (National Endowment for the Humanities) show that Musk's DOGE has NOTHING TO DO WITH SAVING $. IMLS budget: $295M NEH budget: $211M These are tiny drops in the federal spending bucket. This is about ideological control.

New NBC story up about LGBTQ funding... www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-...

It feels like everything is the bleakest it’s been in my memory. Shame on every single person, on both sides of the aisle, who contributed to the widespread acceptance of transphobia. Congrats on putting the most vulnerable people at even greater risk.

With today's awful NIH news, I wanted to inject with a bit of hope: The sheer idiocy and vastness of Trump's & Musk's actions is a catalyst to potentially mobilize an extremely large, powerful, and relatable constituency: 18 million cancer survivors across every part of the nation. Thread 1/7 🧵

It's getting a lot of attn today. But even before today most of the country had very little idea of what has happened at NIH or through it the entire ecosystem of biomedical research in the US. Simply put, Musk, Kennedy & Trump exploded a bomb right in the middle of cancer cure research in the US.

Collecting my thoughts at the end of one of the worst days of my life... At NIH, > 1300 people were RIFed. These range all across the board from institute directors to low level administrative staff. Communication staff and procurement appear to be hardest hit as anticipated from the HHS plan 1/n

We have seen the process used by DOGE to cut government and find efficiency before apple.news/A3cOKzoesTAy...

🚨 Attention NIH & NSF grantees! AAAS is hosting a rapid response webinar this Friday, 12-1 pm ET, on responding to federal research grant terminations. NIH and NSF will be case examples. Register here: aaas.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

And then there were none… My advisor just lost their last remaining federal research grant. All were cancelled for being inclusive of #trans and #nonbinary people. People like us. These grants supported critical research into #LGBTQIA aging, dementia, and caregiving—and funded a staff of 7.

The problem isn't just whether NIH/NSF grants on nuclear polarization, cis-trans isomerization or species diversity get flagged. It's stupid but likely will be brief. The problem is that scientists who do work on mRNA cancer vax or racial/gender or LGBTQ+ health disparities are losing their grants.

🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies

Tucson, Arizona today. Original projected attendance was 3,000 people. 23,000 showed up.

Pete Buttigieg breaks down DEI for everyday folks… “The opposite of diversity is uniformity. The opposite of equity is inequity. The opposite of inclusion is exclusion.” @petebuttigieg.bsky.social Our problem: too many value uniformity over inclusion and they’re the ones running the government. 🧵

Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back. This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008. Also bigger than the 2024 DNC. And the largest ever rally in Bernie’s career (and obviously, mine too).

1/x My NIH grant that would collect data to help *prevent suicidal thoughts and behaviors* among LGBTQ+ people was terminated today, along with many other LGBTQ+ focused grants. These terminations make no sense scientifically. Here's why:

It’s been a devastating 24 hours with 3 NIH grants terminated…all focused on the health and wellbeing of trans or intersex youth. If folks have any ideas of foundations that may be interested in supporting the completion of these projects so years of work aren’t wasted, please let me know. 🙏

We've been tracking unlawful NIH grant terminations for 3 weeks. Spread the word👇! Fellow PIs: what can you do upon termination? ✅ Email PO + document questions ✅ Submit FOIA ✅ Advocate to your OCG/OSP for appeal + litigation ✅ Consider outside litigation ✅ Donate to state AGs + legal orgs 1/🧵
