Started the day at 6:50 AM with an Officer Involved Shooting review, ending it at 8 PM with a CRC Appeal. Only 2-4 years left to go!

If I ever find myself feeling calm at work, I check and invariably discover that I've accidentally closed Outlook.

For four years, City staff & volunteers have worked tirelessly to transition the City of Portland to a new system of police oversight. That moment is finally here: applications for @portlandgov.bsky.social's Community Board for Police Accountability are open! www.governmentjobs.com/careers/port...

"The 15-Hour City represents what we think are all the best qualities of a modern city: a lack of social connections, a profound sense of alienation, and a constant stream of being flipped off by drivers from New Jersey." Sounds like someone has driven on 217.

Calling it now: if you live in the Portland Metro Area, you're going to get used to hearing the phrases "legally-required duties" and "minimum legal obligation" in relationship to what local government has the financial capacity to do in the upcoming fiscal year.

Softly weeping as I read the Multnomah County constraint budget.

The Police Bureau-wide Advisory Committee (PBAC) is sunsetting after less than three years: www.portland.gov/pbac/news/20...

Sam Nordquist deserved better. Matthew Shepard deserved better. We have learned nothing as a society.

To revive an old phrase from last time: The Cruelty is the Point

I really want to know what necessitated this OR DOJ FAQ.

Meanwhile, I'm told the shelter is at its capacity this week, with little or no room for incoming animals. If you're looking for a very good dog, there are many at the moment.

My dad likely died because (pre-ACA) he couldn't afford his blood pressure medication. The free clinic (that he'd gone to like a week before he died) called the day after his funeral to say his bloodwork was "concerning." Our policy choices almost always have a body count.

Not to suck all the fun out of this (very funny) shitpost, but this a problem of access to capital and restrictive zoning, which forces startup breweries into industrial areas. The alternative is to gamble on a high traffic retail corridor, but that's a huge financial risk.

Went before City Council tonight to speak on behalf of the Citizen Review Committee and to share our concerns about the transition to the City's new system of police accountability: www.youtube.com/live/svevT4F...

Just got a pretty weird push poll from Call Research that appears to have been put in the field either by Christine Dramamine (they only asked about her + Kotek) or Oregon GOP. Caller identified me by name and said they pulled the names from public records request, which is new?

And... we're out! Meeting #180 is in the books. Fare thee well 2024, it's been an absolute slog.

I was going to do a Volunteer Wrapped for 2024, but I can't yet because I still have meetings between now and then end of the year. 😂

Today I did something I haven't done in ages - revisited my music blogger roots. Is it a great piece of music journalism? No. Is my music taste any good? Also no. But if you wanna hear about the songs that resonated with me in 2024, here ya go: fridaynightsalone.com/2024/12/30/t...

An appointment at 9 AM on a workday: Leisurely, Luxurious. An appointment at 9 AM on your day off: A Heavy Burden, Verily I Have Been Born to Suffer

Just looked at my work + volunteer calendar for the first two weeks of January and had a small panic attack, so I think maybe I'll abstain from making any New Year's resolutions this year.

"Nothing will change policy faster than elected officials going to constituent funerals" Pretty sobering analysis in this @rogoway.bsky.social piece!

Portland Barmageddon: 2012-present

For those of us who embraced new monikers with the switch, you may want to create a second BlueSky account so no one can impersonate you on here, either.

I always wanted to have my own name on something, so when the opportunity came, I took it. No regrets. 😂

Oh bud. Who's gonna tell him?
