I think Cable became a much more interesting character once Marvel moved past all the mutant messiah stuff.

I think if publishers were to try to return to a model like that, comics like the recent digest-sized DC Compact trades would be a more viable option than single issues.

A weekly periodical collection in the vain of Shonen Jump isn’t a bad idea, but given that single issues cost at minimum $5 and how much digital media has eaten into all monthly periodicals (i.e. magazines, newspapers, etc.), I’m not sure how financially viable such a format would ultimately be.

I still buy and read trades, but given the ever-rising cost of a single issue and the fact that single issues are only available at an ever-shrinking number of comic shops, a more free-to-read sales model like what Webtoon does could get more new and casual readers into the medium.

Their annual revenue for 2024 was $1.35 billion. So pretty good, especially when you consider that the entire North American comic market’s revenue in 2023 was $1.865 billion.

A “Squirrel Girl: Agent of Asgard” comic is such a good concept! Doreen and Ratatoskr had such a fun dynamic in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl that I could see it working as the foundation of its on series.
