The point of excluding categories of people from the military like this is to send the message that they are unworthy of citizenship, it is pure bigotry and the assumptions behind it are disproven by the honorable service of the people being targeted in the first place bsky.app/profile/bran...

Dems are responsible for every shitpost, Republicans aren't responsible for what comes out of their own mouths.

the entire conservative project is now completely on board with the hyperventilating online chud notion that reporting on someone doing something newsworthy is a form of nefarious "doxxing"

You don't have to "craft" anything, you let trans people use the bathroom they want and you ban creep behavior. That's already the policy in most public bathrooms in the US and has been for decades. Cis men pretending to be trans so they can assault women in bathrooms is vanishingly rare.

How could that Trump voter have believed electing him would make IVF free? She must've been into fringey alternative media, maybe saw it from some influencer, professional media outlets would never oh no.

It's very frustrating to me that "savvy" political coverage does not include the savviness required to point out that the lifelong misogynist who lies all the time might not have been serious about delivering on this proposal.

everything you need to know about "savvy" political journos you can learn by how they reacted to Trump saying on abortion, "there has to be some kind of punishment for the woman" in 2016. Covered it as embarrassing for Trump - because he didn't know the correct lie that Republicans tell.

People always say: "if libraries didn't already exist, you could never create them today." Well, lots of the stuff MAGA nihilists are destroying right now is like that. We're not just going to put it all back in place when this if over. It's going to take *generations* to repair this shit.

the thing about claims that USAID is just a cover for imperialism is that currying favor with aid which is secretly harmful is like faking the moon landing using a soundstage which is actually on the moon

I believe one of the rationalizations in renaming it for some states was that people entitled to Medicaid would be so anti-federal they would refuse to sign up. Basically tricking them into going to the doctor before things got way worse.

STOP ELECTING SEXUAL HARASSERS CHALLENGE

They should do this, again on pain of serious sanctions.

All other empiricists are going to learn what it is like to be a criminologist: Unreliable data produced by partisan actors delivered years late. It’s not good.

Reporters should continue to ask about the written certification or Office of Government Ethics regulation required to permit financial conflicts of interest under 18 USC 208, a federal criminal statute. www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/... www.theverge.com/news/614078/...

To me, this points to another reason for DC statehood--it would allow DC to pick the people who enforce laws in DC. Fed property would still be Fed jurisdiction, but non-Fed property would not. The alleged domestic violence incident here was at a private home in SW DC.

This is an INCREDIBLY serious story for Washington, DC. There is one prosecutor for DC: the federal/DOJ US Attorney for DC. That's a Trump-appointed position now. The Trump appointee is corrupt, venal, MAGA. Here the DC police wanted to prosecute a crime, and the Trump USAO SAID NO. 1/

Heritage types are suddenly quite quiet about a prosecutor declining to press charges against someone charged with a violent crime. Not that it was ever really on, but hoping the mask is well and truly off of “tough on crime.” It has never been abt safety. It has always been abt social control.

The charge in Mill’s case was a misdemeanor, which in DC has a statute of limitations of 3 yrs. Felonies, tho? statutes of limitation of 6+ years. So ppl w Rs in their titles may have more a temporary reprieve than a get-out-of-jail-forever card, depending on 2028. Hope someone keeps a list.

it seems like DC might now be a free fire zone for ALLEGED domestic violence, as long as you have an R after your name

More evidence that the police are a baronial class operating above and outside the law. Opponents of aggressive police reform always argue “we just need to fire the few bad apples” … … and then purge the database that tracks bad apples. For too many, any sort of police accountability is too much.

The tweet here is preposterous, but worth pointing out that MANY Centrist Pundits elevated Hanania as a Very Serious Thinker, and AFAICT none paid ANY sort of reputational cost. I don’t know how we go about fixing the incentives of the punditocracy, but it’s an important problem to solve.

It's only AGI if it comes from the bay area. Otherwise it's just called copyright infringement.

james carville is a profoundly unserious person. and i cannot make it any clearer to those of you who follow me: VERY IMPORTANT DEMOCRATS WILL LISTEN TO HIM. they have followed his instructions for DECADES. this is a huge danger sign.

His suggestion is literally "do nothing" and Carville is the go to example of the "consultant class" that told Harris/Walz to stop with the "weird" commentary on the GOP and absolutely WRECKED that momentum.

this is a damn good way of putting the James Carville phenomenon in perspective

We have to get rid of DEI and restore "merit," they said, as cronies, hacks, and frauds are installed into positions of grave responsibility.

@fritschner.bsky.social brings up a very interesting point here

Have had some people suggest their Republican congresspersons don’t care what they think and won’t listen to any criticism. Believe me — they are hearing it:

if anyone needs me i will be slamming my head into my desk

Processing camps and a paramilitary army reminds me of something or other but I can’t quite place it

I can’t resist observing how bananagrams this is from an accountability-to-the-people-through-the-President standpoint, the basic justification for the “unitary executive” and critiques of independent agencies. No accountability, at all.

theme of the week: DOGE as major (internal) national security threat which serious military, law enforcement and spy agency chiefs are now openly in conflict with

so much for creating domestic sources of critical, cutting-edge microchips

As an expert in AI and its misuse, I cannot begin to express how arbitrary and capricious the results of any attempt to “use AI” by DOGE to evaluate federal workers’ email responses will be. This is almost certain to be technology as fig leaf for the rankest of human biases.

Yeah, even setting aside the overestimation of AI capabilities, no review of five elements of one week of someone’s employment is a good encapsulation of their performance or even their job!

People who don't write newsletters or are new to it might not realize that Substack's monetization model is different from its competitors like Ghost and Beehiiv. Substack takes 10% of your earnings. That's primarily how they make the money they give to right-wing authors. *You* are funding them.

If you have not won an election in a year that starts with a 2, I beg of you: Shut the fuck up.
