The one piece of the South American puzzle I can give you is that people back then weren't too familiar with English so they loved changing lyrics when misheard. Tarzan Boy's "gimme the other gimme the other" changed to "kiwi y limón, kiwi y limón" (kiwi and lemon), which basically became a meme.
