He was also, apparently, a lawyer! I'm excited to pull more quotes from the book

It must have been fun re-living the whole thing. Did you have a favourite player from the 60s and 70s?

Did he tell any fun stories?

What was it about him? Did he just bring the swagger and the confidence that the team could hit? I am reading that they brought him in after the famous 11-game winning streak and it solidified the lineup.
Did he have a signature moment as a Met?

He hit .252/.321/.455 for the Miracle #Mets team but had an even better season in 1970, hitting .288/.348/.515 with 22 HR 97 RBI and finished 13th in the MVP voting.
I am only in chapter 5 of this book but I can already tell I am going to love every bit of learning about the '69 Mets.

Clendenon was a huge part of the #Pirates teams of the 60s but was often overshadowed by Willie Stargell and Roberto Clemente. He came into the 1969 #Mets team and clubbed 12 HR with 37 RBI over 72 games, hitting in the middle of their lineup and platooning with Ed Kranepool.

"...and did appearances in the offseason to stay afloat but didn't have a real job. He did. But 'Clen' was a motormouth and sometimes you just wanted to go 'shut the fuck up!'
I mean, he got on EVERYBODY, top to bottom. I don't know what the hell you would get on Seaver about, but he would"

"How many teams had a clubhouse lawyer like Clendenon, who was actually studying to be a lawyer and was good at it?" Ron Swoboda once asked me rhetorically, "And he was a black guy in the 60s that had what a lot of us didn't have: a winter job. Most of us just farted around..."

"...for a couple of weeks when he got hot. He might start hitting long balls, and all of a sudden, instead of losing 1-0 or 2-1, you start winning those games 3-2. At the end of the year, you win a hundred games because you win 20 or 30 more on-run games than you lose. It's such a fine line"

"When Clendenon came on board," Jim McAndrew said, "you got the feeling that if pitchers kept a ball game close, he would help us win it with his bat. Up until then, if we gave up a run, it was like 'uh-oh.' We were blessed to pick up Donn because he was one of those guys that could carry a club...

Apparently, RA Dickey pitched in 112.1 innings as a #Mariners pitcher in 2008
He went 5-8 with a 5.21 ERA, starting 14 games but also finishing 9
On August 17, 2008, Dickey tied the record for most wild pitches in an inning with 4

This seems like a weird stat to filter out but to me, it means the opposing team was scared to pitch to the hitter and yet still managed to let them burn them.

Anyone who compares any player to Barry Bonds has to go back and look at how terrified the entire league was of pitching to him 2004 to realize how deadly he was as a hitter.

164 times in franchise history, a Blue Jays player had more than 5 HR through the first 36 games of a season

Halladay almost walked Hanley Ramirez in the 7th but Ramirez fouled off what would have been ball four.

Chris Coghlan is not happy about striking out for a second time on an outside fastball in the seventh inning.
Carlos Ruiz probably had a hand in framing some of those pitches but this is well before we ever thought of those things.

Gene Conley played for the Milwaukee #Braves and the Boston #Celtics in the 50s

Halladay actually falls behind two of the first three hitters and almost walks them both but gets a 1-2-3 inning regardless
Hanley Ramirez is one of them and seeing him in the teal pinstripe #Marlins jersey is pure nostalgia

In his starts in May 2010, Roy Halladay had the following pitch counts:

once again, starting pitching is completely different now

I'm watching his perfect game from 2010. In his 11th start as a Philadelphia Phillie, Halladay threw a perfect game
In the first inning, the CSN broadcast crew is talking about his poor start against the #RedSox where he gave up 6 runs over 5.2 innings
