After you’ve been flattened by a track-tuned Mustang, you can point to the sign in righteous indignation as you draw your final breath!

Orleibs are pricey, but they last forever. I’ve had these for 15 years. I’ve just had to replace the plastic buckles with metal ones.

You have good taste in gear!
I also like to carry a Topeak cargo net in my pack, just in case.

Wonderful. My experience was similar. Simple stories like ours, centered on the economic freedom of riding, get people thinking about how they can do it.

I’ll just add that I think the financial aspect of alt trans is undervalued. People will use all kinds of excuses to blow off the health, climate, traffic arguments. Money and its utility are universal concerns that get people thinking about their personal situations.

When I meet people who are skeptical of the car-free lifestyle,I tell them about the vacations I take with the money I save.

Love it, but where are my shopping opportunities? Also, a huge backlit plastic sign is needed. How do I know what this place is otherwise?

When it looked like I might get laid off in 2008 I immediately sold my car to slash expenses. I ended up keeping the job, but stayed carless. Bike, walk, or transit only. Now an economic imperative has evolved into advocacy for bikes and transit.

In a semi-perfect world, 10 minutes would be the norm. I’d like to see seven. A lot of folks put up with 20 or more, which is brutal.

Yup. If I miss my bus, will the next one be soon enough that it doesn’t ruin my whole day or even cost me my job.

I had a similar experience in France. Paris to Bordeaux in 2 hours on the (relatively ancient) TGV. Seemingly impossible to build in the US for all kinds of reasons, mostly dumb.

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.
