DOGE is like if Fyre Festival was a government agency.

Today is Saturday. The perfect day to turn on Advanced Data Protection to protect yourself against increasingly authoritarian governments being seized by the worst people alive. Stay safe. Encrypt. 🙂 support.apple.com/en-us/108756

Re-sharing – now without the editorializing! “On Friday, Penn notified department chairs that it will cut admissions across graduate programs, a decision faculty members say was made after programs had already accepted students.”

I’m launching a sci-fi book club!

The USPS—among many of their functions—is essential for library delivery and interlibrary loan services too, to get materials to readers who need them. Especially for those isolated, or have mobility issues. It is essential infrastructure for our democracy. Support #USPS #libraries

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com Elon Musk is “exploiting vulnerabilities that are built into the nation’s technological systems, operating as what cybersecurity experts call an insider threat,” our columnist Zeynep Tufekci writes.

Books designed to be read only by human eyes are different from books designed to be read by machines, which is why Google will tell you that the phrase “shake my booty” can be found in an 1863 English translation of Don Quixote.

One more time for the people in the back: Trump does not give a f*ck about working folks!

A must read on the Clarivate announcement to end perpetual access to print, e-books, & digital collections by end of year. Siobhan Haimé suggests this disaster for libraries could be “an opportunity to radically explore alternative models to protect equitable access.” www.uksg.org/newsletter/u...

fantasizing about a world where an opposition congress responds to trump’s attempts to usurp legislative power by defunding the entire white house staff

SCOOP: The director of data science and engineering for the United States Digital Service—which Elon Musk rebranded as the US DOGE Service—has resigned from her position. “I do not believe that DOGE can continue to deliver the work of USDS, based on their actions so far,” she said.

Judge: “It’s actually kind of a really important point”

www.doge-tracker.com Wtf?

I think anyone who's been paying attention knows this. But it's worth stating clearly. The idea that any of Elon's wilding spree is being done in the name of efficiency is absurd on its face because the terminations are virtually all being done based on duration of service because that creates ...

🚨 SCOOP: DOGE is seeking personal taxpayer data at IRS, sources tell me. 🚨 Trump admin is pushing IRS to agree to an MOU that would give DOGE access to granular data on every taxpayer, business and nonprofit in the country.

As a political scientist who studies countries that managed to stop the slide into authoritarianism, I can assure you that ***refraining from provoking the authoritarian*** is not how it works. Without further ado, I will now go tear out another chunk of hair.

As DOGE began infiltrating government agencies and targeting federal staff for termination, I started interviewing tech workers on the front lines. With the mass layoffs unfolding today, and with their permission, I'm sharing their stories. This is what it's been like to endure Musk's campaign.

“AI use in government generally hasn't worked well, particularly when there are no regulations or safeguards to ensure that this stuff isn't used for harmful ends,” @kevindeliban.bsky.social tells NPR. "And in the case of DOGE, it's actively being weaponized." www.npr.org/2025/02/13/n...

Just in case this isn't already clear . . .

So many horrifying things are happening, but as a historian, I find the blatant rewriting of our history to be particularly chilling.

When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted. Yet somehow Musk isn't.

They couldn’t do a VH1: I Love the 2020s because everyone interviewed would start crying.
