In 2010, Israeli forces attacked a Gaza aid flotilla, killing 10 people. In the aftermath, the Obama administration blocked UN efforts for an investigation, Biden defended the attack, and Chuck Schumer condemned the United Nations and defended Israel.

"it's not peaceful for people to be on the highway" -LA Mayor Karen Bass right now. This is what I mean when I say the word "peaceful" as applied to protesters is about prescribing placidity, not nonviolence. Calmly marching on a freeway is pretty inarguably nonviolent. " Peaceful" you can debate

btw this is the GOP justification for passing laws that protect drivers who ram into protesters

Democrats are debating whether to be more progressive or centrist. But it's not clear it will make a difference either way. Republicans were at their nadir after 2008 and then had a Red Wave in 2010. They talked about supporting immigration reform in 2013...and then elected Trump.

Pundits & consultants love nothing more than trying to convince their employers they can direct the flow of history rather than being carried along with the rest of us

They will invent the pretext unless we’re so thoroughly supine they don’t need to, which leads to the same outcome.

I think there is a virtue in the left knowing what the right thinks and says, but how could you be a politically aware person right now and not already think about the right constantly? Having some redoubts to think through issues with relatively likeminded people is good, actually

not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

1 in 12 Americans live in California. 1 in 35 Americans live in LA County. LA is America

I heard the great Ericka Huggins say a few days ago something to the effect of: "You don't have to 'go back' and do what we did as Panthers. You already have some people who have built on what we did who are working right now in YOUR COMMUNITIES." - She shouted out the People's Kitchen as an example

The Panther survivors are the first ones to tell you that they did NOT have it figured out. They tried to meet their moment.

I am a huge fan of history, Lord knows. But it is not a blueprint. At best, it helps you to ask some better questions in the present.

You *must* swallow your impulse to parse and nitpick and find fault with protestors’ actions right now. We need solidarity so badly. It’s literally all we have. I am begging you, as a mother of 2 kids who is terrified of martial law, to find it in yourself to support the protestors. We need you.

I'm a believer in nonviolent resistance for moral reasons, and I think it can be incredibly powerful when well-planned and sustained, but don't tell me violence doesn't work. The people successfully rolling back my rights were sending bomb threats to children's hospitals.

The path to the end of Roe V. Wade was paved with abortion providers being killed, and clinics being bombed and set on fire.

Love seeing some zines that I donated at the Crown Heights Abolitionist Block Party that took place yesterday. Even though I couldn't be there in person thrilled to have some zines available for the community. Love summer block parties!!

Massive #ICEoutofLA action today in downtown Los Angeles as ICE raids continue, one day after Trump announces deployment of National Guard and threatens to deploy the military. 📸 for @theintercept.com

This is a fever dream. The city is not under migrant occupation. This whole thing kicked off because ICE began an intense operation across the city to raid Home Depots and nail salons and places where random undocumented immigrants might be going about their day working a job.

Also point this out to anyone you can. These were not planned protests. These were normies getting the supplies for their weekend projects or at a restaurant and saw their servers getting hauled off and were like this is some bullshit.

Important to distinguish between liberal POLITICIANS and regular liberal people.

I see posts saying protesters aren't brutalized under Dems. I guess right-wingers aren't the only ones fantasizing about a mythical past. I was brutalized at protests under Obama. Folks were brutalized at protests under Biden. We can condemn the escalations of the present w out fetishizing the past.

Los Angeles is not a war zone. The media keeps cropping the same damn photo to make it look like it is. There are plenty of live feeds going on right now that verify what is actually happening on the ground in real time. Nothing. The only unrest is coming from Trump & his thugs.

If you have an unread copy of Let This Radicalize You lying around, this would be an excellent time to read Chapter 6: “Violence” in Social Movements. It's also a good time to share that chapter with others.

All of the talk about "peaceful protest" makes me think of all the times I have been part of a protest where the police cracked someone over the head and then charged that person with assault. They will call you violent. You can't control that or other people.

listening to some local news out of LA and it’s really something hearing reporters try to distinguish between “just normal people here” and “the protestors”

We found out that ICE is staying at the AC hotel in #Pasadena and now there's a couple of hundred people protesting #NoICE

You focus must be on the state. The state is the instigator of all violence.

Breaking: California Gov. Gavin Newsom says he has formally requested the Trump admin rescind their "unlawful deployment" of troops in Los Angeles and "return them to my command."

“Pls be witnesses. Take pictures. Document everything. Take names. Remember what you see,” @ndlon.bsky.social says. “We need to reach out to relatives of those who have been seized. These are our ppl they are taking, & we do this work out of love for them, for their worth.” ndlon.org/statement-fr...

The people who are ICE watching and relaying information are so clutch right now. Grateful to every one.
