These stories showing up nonstop on local TV news youtu.be/N23KVyaSoLw?...

This is such a great article explaining why the destruction of research funding will harm the US in the long run. www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

I’ve seen several stories like this. They didn’t limit “probation” period firings to new hires.

As the spouse of a federal scientist, I can say we’re ALL living in a state of constant extreme anxiety. How little these salaries take from the annual budget. What vital work these scientists/others do. And if he loses his job we lose our NPS housing too. The cruelty & the terror ARE the point.

fantasizing about a world where an opposition congress responds to trump’s attempts to usurp legislative power by defunding the entire white house staff

Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

This is absolutely the Twitter Files for the government. Elon wanted to humiliate his enemies. But what Twitter Files showed was generally careful governance, some bad calls, & stuff taken out of context by “journalists” who didn’t understand the basics. Same here. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/u...

I have remained fairly silent over the past few weeks, largely because I have been processing the reality of an organization dedicated to improving government services being repurposed into the vector of destruction of those very same services. I wrote up some thoughts. Quick tl;dr🧵

This is where we are now: An elementary school at Fort Campbell has removed all books from its library that so much as *allude* to slavery or the civil rights movement. The wholesale erasure of history in real time.

REPOST if you support our federal workforce and know how dedicated they are to their jobs. Show them you appreciate them!

It took me a moment to realize that this picture of Tulsi Gabbard was not in fact a picture of Cruella de Vil.

The thinner tree was cut down years ago, and the larger one has been supporting and feeding it since then. They "wake up" together in the spring and "go to sleep" together in the autumn. This natural phenomenon is known as inosculation.

♥️♥️ Let's not forget that Valentine was martyred for standing firm in his values/beliefs and doing what was right when faced with a tyrant's decree. ♥️♥️ Forget the commercial holiday, but send a love letter to people who are fighting for others to have the freedom to love. ♥️♥️

let's see what DOGE has been cancelling at the department of education. @stuartbuck.bsky.social went through the list. will link to his post at the end of the thread. i will start with his 4th example: foundational research to understand how american kids are doing at school

Civil servants have always operated under the assumption that the law is their anchor, that violations of law would be prosecuted, and that processes existed to reinforce the law. No one is prepared for processes/technical systems to function as the guardrail against malevolent forces from inside.

Authoritarians ask Musk to turn over lists of USAID staff The prime minister of Slovakia asked Musk to share information about NGOs and reporters who worked there. In Russia, the state duma speaker said, if USAID is an enemy organization, Russia wants a list, "and we’ll hand it over to the FSB.”

I understand the list of things this man has said and done is long but that he tweeted that COVID was engineered to spare Jews and Chinese people less than two years ago and is now HHS secretary is truly toxic icing on the antivax cake, to me www.npr.org/sections/sho...

This is true! Fantastic opportunity for a motivated junior researcher looking for a stimulating research environment in which to grow while prepping to pursue a Ph.D.

Anyone have visibility into what new contracts Palantir is getting across federal agencies? (And what contracts DOGE is canceling to give to Palantir?)

PhD students in social sciences studying "metascience" and AI: This looks like an *AMAZING* opportunity. Fully funded research postdoc that can be housed at whatever university you can find an appropriate mentor. sloan.org/programs/dig...

BREAKING: We are suing DOGE and the Office of Personnel Management to stop the brazen and illegal data sharing of federal employee data with the “government efficiency” group.

NEW: ProPublica has identified nine additional Musk-affiliated staffers. A former staffer at Boring Company now has an official role at DOGE in the Executive Office of the President. A former X employee now works in the General Services Administration.

New Trump EO seeks to continue to slash federal employees: *attrition - one new employee for every four that leave *DOGE approves any new hires *agencies must present reduction in force plans, will focus on federal employees deemed non-essential during shutdowns www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

We are totally transparent, unless you name any of the unvetted teenage cybercriminals and eugenicists we’re letting rewrite federal IT infrastructure, which we will treat as a crime.

Just got a tip from a guy at the FAA. You'll never believe who is still getting new government contracts while all the contracts at the Department of Education and USAID and other agencies are being nuked from orbit.

FFS. New EO mandates a large-scale reduction in force (RIF). The sheer idea of that you can cleanly identify which positions in a federal agency are statutorily required is ludicrous. What about support functions for example? Gaaaah. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.

Need a giggle? Thousands of Danes have signed a petition to purchase California for more sunshine and avocado toast - to be negotiated by LEGO and the cast of Borgen. I keep thinking about how much IP Disney stole from Tivoli, but they’re being more gracious. Tehe. ktla.com/news/califor...

I’m still baffled that the Secret Service had a multimillion dollar Super Bowl ad at this moment when most govt jobs are under attack. Is this the recovery plan when folks realize that too many people quit? Or that we might actually need civil servants? youtu.be/iys5AHdqKss?...

"Indirect costs" just means paying the full cost of the research. That's it. Some costs are for one project, like lab equipment. Some are shared by many, like buildings and utilities. Grants that don't pay shared costs are a net negative. The fact that Harvard used to turn them down drives that home

This is just a brilliant reflection of what government civil servants are going through. I'm hearing similar things across the government.

An important first-person account from someone inside OPM:

I feel terribly for people applying to PhD programs this year. I’m hearing from all sorts of places how the uncertainty about funding means external funding-dependent departments aren’t taking new students. :( I’m sure this will continue to ripple. ::gulp::
