And that's just 1 thing. This is their 2024 research highlights, and it barely scratches the surface: www.nih.gov/sites/defaul... I was an intern at NIH, it's incredible. Research college campuses feel like they have a "buzz" to me. But if their buzz is a cup of tea, NIH's is a gallon of Monster.

"China is the bane of our existence and we need to beat them in research." "Funding scientific research is a waste of money." It's wild that MAGA nuts believe both of those.

Well said. IMO, truth has a liberal bias, so fund editorially independent outlets that speak the truth. (And between campaigns, not for 1 yr every 4 yrs!) 2% of the ~$1.5B they got could fund 3 local newspapers in 9 states ($250K/yr, 4 yrs), plus podcasts, livestreamers, etc.

Yeah, it's appalling to me that "none" has won the popular vote for 120 years. (Election Day being a holiday would help a lot, but still.) Between: -senile nutcase whose policies will set the US back in every way, vs. -younger person whose policies make sense It shouldn't even be a contest.

Yup, it'd do wonders and be easy to set up. And it could be streamed on Twitch & YouTube too - more eyes. It's easier than ever to have Fireside Chats, I'd do that 1x/wk if I were in office. IMO, Dems aren't using new media well, & I hope they improve. (Credit to Bernie & AOC, they're good!)

Luigi's Mansion is great, I really hope Luigi's Mansion 2 comes out soon.

Then why were 34% of people not persuaded enough to vote? All I'm saying is that Dems need to learn something from this, fast. (I HOPE they do, I hate the R party.) Given Biden's accomplishments, their sane platform, a huge ad budget, and the fact Harris isn't deranged, they should've won easily.
comment in response to post
But, for clarity, I'm NOT saying they should just talk on C-SPAN. Dems should do podcasts, send emails and snail mail, go on radio and TV, send press releases to every newspaper in their state, etc. Get any audience. Frankly, their messaging sucks. $1B+ of ads is worthless when used poorly.

You don't need to hear reps talk, but you're also engaged enough to talk about elections ~2 years out. I'm assuming you would've voted either way. That isn't true of many would-be voters who stayed at home. "None" has won every election since 1904, and that's the easiest demographic to win over.
comment in response to post
Then those people will stay at home in '26/'28 instead of voting. If you want Dems to WIN, that's a bizarre approach. I just did the math. If 50% of ppl who stayed at home are willing to vote Dem and 13% of them voted, Harris would've won.
comment in response to post
The frustration is legit, but that person wasn't blaming Dems. They were pointing out that Dems need to do something, if only for the sake of optics and for ammo in '26/'28. If Dems don't TRY, it legitimizes "they won't fight for us", and would-be Dem voters will stay at home.
comment in response to post
Why not both (or weekly briefings)? Democrats need to start doing everything possible to obstruct, and then shout everything they can discuss publicly from the rooftops. Otherwise many people will just assume the party isn't trying to help them and they'll just stay at home in '26 or '28.

On a completely unrelated note: I love Luigi's Mansion, and I hope Luigi's Mansion 2 comes out sometime.

Sorry, gotta nitpick: it isn't "zero", it's THREE zeroes. Only mentioning that because I want to make sure people treat the mistake with the gravity it deserves.

"In these circumstances, it must be indisputable that this court acts within the bounds of its authority." This seems to mean "a TRO would give the Supreme Court an excuse to accuse me of overreach & overturn my ruling". IMO, this is justifiable. If Judge Chutkan gave a TRO, it'd just backfire.

Honestly I wish scientists just got instant approval on 1 grant/yr under $50K. Even if it's "just" for a pet project, it could be very useful in the future! As with any investment, some won't see a positive ROI and some will get 1000x. More funding increases the number of the latter.

Also, we should call it DGE instead of DOGE. Muskrat named it after an old meme, so why not spite him? "Of" isn't used in most acronyms anyway.

The scientific consensus is that it most likely came from the seafood market, not a lab. And yes, absolutely. They have returns of $2.46 per dollar spent. Easy math.

Yes! Waste their time. During Hitler's rise, a complacent moderate left and left-wing infighting meant no unified opposition formed to stop him. It's bizarre how Dem politicians say they're "fighting" their fascist opponents but then act like SocDems in the 30s did (see pic).
comment in response to post
Exactly! Do everything to stonewall them. Unless they get rid of the filibuster, filibuster EVERYTHING. If they change the rules to mandate that you actually must speak, get a book ready. Hit the 20-hr cap on debate for the reconciliation bill, then add spurious amendments (they bypass the cap).

Can confirm. Dracula and I have a lot in common: - very white - cis - think the only useful thing about fascists is their blood - male

But the party is run by geriatrics who are afraid of shadows and the campaign had an awful strategy (both in terms of the contents of messages AND how to relay them to voters). I genuinely think Republicans are bribing Democratic consultants to sabotage the party. This stuff is all obvious.

It's wild to me that "none" has won every election since 1904. Clearly people don't want to vote for some reason. Going more centrist hasn't worked, and "Trump is worse" only worked 1 of 3 times. Maybe there's a reason, like "watering down your platform makes you boring". What a original idea.

I'm really glad that I could help you out! Feel free to let me know if you need any more help later on.

AMD is MUCH better - the RX7000 series is the best, but the RX6000 series is good too. Most Linux distros already support AMD cards, so you can just plug it in and go. Without knowing your budget & what you use the desktop for, I can't give you a specific suggestion. Still, I hope this helps! (4/4)
comment in response to post
Graphics cards are definitely trickier. DON'T use Nvidia - their Linux support is awful, and people who are newer to Linux should strongly avoid them. Even I've struggled to debug their problems, and I've used Linux for ~16 yrs. (3/?)

I've used a 2TB Crucial BX500 (which is SATA) for 6+ years and it hasn't had any issues (and I push my computer hard). If you need more storage later, nearly any motherboard should let you add a second hard drive. (2/?)
comment in response to post
Sure! Nearly any hard drive should work, as long as it's SATA (that's almost all of them). If you need <=2TB of space, I'd recommend you get an SSD - they're much faster than HDDs. That said, there are fewer SATA SSDs now. (1/?)

Says a lot that he can't even quote an insult from a movie correctly, let alone come up with a new one. If you went up to a kid pushing crayons up their nose, they could come up with a much more scathing insult.

Yeah, same. A more accurate statement is "fetuses are nonbinary until 6 weeks" (and that's funnier IMO).

Agreed! The month after Walz was announced was the high-water mark - calling Rs "weird", joking about Vance's couch, etc. Funny AND progressive guy who shone at rallies. But he got muzzled and couldn't go on the attack as much as he could've. Wasted opportunity.

Introduce gay, black, and trans Proud Boys, then use them as mascots. (Maybe call them Proud Men too.) They should be more thoroughly used than Mickey Mouse. You should be able to use their merch to make this room.

The worst part about the tariffs is that, now that a Canada-US-Mexico trade war has started, we are no longer the CUM Zone.
comment in response to post
Yeah, agreed. It sorta reminds me of the XY Problem in CS/IT - people know they have an issue but they can't identify the actual cause. IF devs handle it well, feedback itself "should" be a net positive - they can find patterns in negative feedback and just ignore feedback they don't want.

The latest performances of Hamlet have different actors than the original, so the experience is ruined. 0/10.
comment in response to post
Agreed. Plays would probably be a good analogy too - they start from the same "core" (script/game), but some changes are allowable for practicality (actors/game hardware & controls). And some plays have been around in some form for 100+ years (Hamlet, Les Mis, Uncle Vanya, HMS Pinafore, etc.)
comment in response to post
Agreed! Repubs figured out how to make their (dumb) message convincing & how to spread it. Dems haven't figured out either of those, and legacy media & 1+ BILLION dollars couldn't make up for those flaws. Hogg's election is really good. I hope he's able to change things - otherwise, we're all boned.

Democrats: lose because they run a candidate who's too centrist and bland to make people want to go vote Democrats: "They were too leftist, we need someone even more centrist! That'll get us the [mythical] swing voters!"

All I'm saying is to have the correct standards. "VN is bad by arcade game standards" = bad reason for negative rating. "VN is bad by VN standards" = valid reason. "Pong is bad by VN standards" = bad reason for negative rating. "Pong is is bad by arcade game standards" = valid reason.
comment in response to post
I'm not talking about reviews saying a VN has a bad story. I'm talking about reviews saying it has "bad gameplay" or requires "a lot of reading". Anyone playing an arcade game should expect low/no story. Anyone playing a visual *novel* should expect lots of reading and low/no gameplay.
comment in response to post
Kinda similar: I've seen negative reviews on visual novels for having "bad gameplay" or having "a lot of reading". Should I leave a bad review for Pong because the story sucks?

Ah, I think I took you too literally (esp. "lifetime"). I agree with you, yeah. Current approaches can't scale up to AGI level. Minor improvements to LLMs + more data only go so far. (And they're out of data.) And like I said, it's kinda pointless. Why would anyone want an AGI over a non-G AI?
comment in response to post
Sure, but a lifetime is long enough for a new paradigm (well, depends on your current age). For comparison: My dad was born when computers with 32KB of memory cost $8K. His dad was already 10 when the first Bombe was built, and he died after GPT-3.5 released.
comment in response to post
I agree with you, but tbf I think AGI is feasible in my lifetime. But it's just pointless. AGI is a major risk, and I'd guess it'd take much more power than an LLM. What could it do better than a specialized AI (no G)? e.g., biomed researchers would prefer an AI that's GREAT at biomed over an AGI.
