One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

I celebrate the 80% of Germans who did not vote for the far right. Do not make 19.6% of German voters into "the" German people (again). "The" German people don't exist! The German population is diverse and divided, but voted overwhelmingly for liberal democratic parties. #BTW25 #GermanElection

German exit polls are bad, no sugar coating that. But very interesting that they are not AS bad as many polls suggested it could have been. A historically huge turnout seems to have contributed to slightly smaller than expected proportions for the right & extreme right.

That's 100% correct! Let's follow the money? Who sponsors the far-right? Tons of resources are poured into "anti-woke" BS - certainly quite a few people with power get upset by it. Why?

Yep.

How about instead of profiling the “personalities” saying horrible things at far right conferences, we profile the people who paid to put on those conferences. Cmon the billionaires pushing this poison have names & faces.

Exploited migrant farm workers in UK paid for picks, not hours. Workers not paid for in-work travel, time spent moving between workstations, team meetings, receiving instructions on equipment use. Employers violating employment rights. Need effective enforcement, not deregulation.

The @Telegraph, @thetimes, @MailOnline & @TheSun publish corrections to their scaremongering on undocumented migrants in London. Imagine between them the reach & power of these papers. The fact is they are using that power to instil Trumpist hate & we are ill-equipped to resist.

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Trump net approval at -8 (45/53). 57% say he's exceeding authority, 84% say he should follow court rulings. Musk approval net -15 (34/49). Heavy margins against him shutting departments, and 63% worried about access to personal data. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Going down memory lane when the migrants' right movement was unafraid to do some real campaigning. And when Labour had a strong values-based voice. Wondering if we would be able to get this strong a vocal outcry just 5 years later. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-poli...

This is also the logical conclusion of decades now of slow mainstreaming of far-right talking points Islamophobia, transphobia, anti-immigration discourses were never "legitimate grievances" that deserved to be aired. Their purpose was to prepare the way for this

Well worth reading. I’ve just read “Nomad Century” by Gaia Vince which is also a great contribution to understanding migration.

🚨1 in 3 children living in deep poverty are migrant children. This is not a coincidence. Hostile immigration policies drive migrant families into poverty. Tell this Government to protect EVERY child from poverty. Take action: act.praxis.org.uk/email-minist...

If you read @zoejardiniere.bsky.social post regularly not much of this will be a surprise to you, however the piece ties together many important arguments & pushes back on many of the anti-imigration talking points. Well worth a read.

Same point. Finally this is being talked about in the media.

Always this. This was true in 2016 and it is true today. Be more like Spain — stop pandering to the extreme right and make the positive case for immigration. It’s a wonderful thing culturally and an economic necessity

The data could not be more clear: our public services will collapse without immigration. People desperately need to come here & we desperately need people, too. Me, for @metrouk.bsky.social metro.co.uk/2025/02/19/n...
