A day late, but posting anyway for #portfolioday I mainly do mesoamerican related art, but also sometimes draw other cultures and myths from history. I also do historical fashion studies of mesoamerica and comics. You can support me on patreon or commission me. And look out for my comic this year!

Redesigned the Scooby Doo gang as Maya characters in the late classic period (c. 600-900).

Tezcatlipoca. Based on Codex Fejérváry-Mayer, Codex Borgia, Codex Tudela and Duran's illustrations. #aztec #mexica #nahua #mesoamerica #smokingmirror

So as 2024 is ending or ended depending where you are, a review of some of my illustrations I made. Some illustrations and sketches are missing and of course, my comic Dream Rider, which took up most of my time lol. Here's hoping for another successful year in art. 🥂 Happy New Year Everyone!

Happy New Year 2025! It is the year of the snake (乙巳年). Wish you all the best in the coming year! Balhae clothing, early 8th century

The Eagle Lady, who is the wife of the Sun (Tonatiuh). She is known by various names, including: Cuauhtli Izohuauh, Quilaztli (also referred to as the witch), Coacihuatl, Cuaucihuatl, Yaocihuatl, and Tzitziminicihuatl. This depiction is based on both the Codex Borbonicus and Codex Borgia.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

If it doesn't look like this, I'm not interested. Art by Peter Connolly.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14 Iyadzehe Sicuaa Dzico Ñaña (Dec 2023) Lady 10 Deer Jaguar Quechquemitl was a Mixtec princess & later queen. I put a chihuahua in this pic in honour of my dog Hazel. The work of @zotz.bsky.social was helpful for me in reconstructing a Mixtec noblewoman. #MedievalSky 🗃️

Cihuateotl descending from the sky at night. They were said to prey upon children. Originally meant to post around Halloween but I was severely ill at the time. Based on stone sculptures and florentine codex.

An illustration I made depicting the legend of how Quetzalcoatl and his precious twin Xolotl pilfer the bones of humanity from the Lord of the Dead in Mictlan, to bring humanity back to life.

An illustration of the Sun, Tonatiuh and his Cihuateteo, standing over the defeated Tzitzimime - ominous, powerful goddesses who seek to attack the Sun and cause cosmic instability.

Mourning watery woman. Based on a funeral scene of the Maya Maize deity from the early classic period. She is wearing a beaded belt and apron. Curiously this is among the last depictions I have seen of aprons worn by Maya women.

The Maya deity "God L" tying a bracelet to a woman in his palace. The various women in the scene are proposed to be either his daughters or his wives. Based on the Princeton vase painting which also depicts the Hero Twins in the same scene.

Maya woman seated with a cushion. Based on late classic vase paintings.

Huitzilopochtli, Mexica patron deity based on several codices.

Coatlicue, earth goddess and mother of Huitzilopochtli. Based on the florentine codex.

Coyolxauhqui, sister of Huitzilopochtli who became the Moon. The stars behind her reference her brothers, the 400 brothers who became the stars. Based on her stone monolith.

Happy Krampusnacht! Don't go out into the woods tonight.

Gruß vom Krampus! had to do a little drawing of the big guy on his day, usually I do Perchten but we can have Krampus as a treat

Hoipu Kulele of the Coast Miwok of the North Bay (Sonoma and Marin counties), California. Being the wife of the chief she wears an elegant feather cape made of canada goose, snow goose and mallard duck feathers. Behind her is an acorn granary, redwood bark house and shell mound.

One of my very old illustrations of a Maya boxer with conch knuckle dusters.

A couple years ago I made a more historically accurate edit (on the right) of Chel from Road to El Dorado for fun. Looking at the late postclassic Maya. And yes, I am aware that the legend may have been inspired by the Muisca, but the culture in the film was clearly modeled after the Maya.

Lady K'abel, queen of Waka (El Peru), descended from the Calakmul snake dynasty she married into Waka royalty and eventually took on military titles there. Hence why she appears with a shield and K'awiil baton.

Another old one, some court ladies based on late classic Maya vessels. These were concepts for a short comic (40 pages) set in Tikal around the reign of Yik'in Chan K'awiil. Alas it never materialized but one day, perhaps I can revisit it. It also would have been my longest comic all in full color.

P'urepecha Zoo of the Cazonci, with his family and animal trainer.

Another old one, observing the hairstyles and headwear of Preclassic El Salvador's site of Bolinas. I did this one prior to my studies of the Olmec and it is interesting how the central figure is often seen in among them. Which makes sense given that they were contemporaries.
