That's very gracious of you

Did you get to tell them that?

(I feel like I'm astonishingly bad at counting)

I feel less likely to lose count pile shuffling, but also I only play 40 card decks so maybe that's a factor

This! Pile "shuffling" is great to make sure you have the right number of cards, it has a real use! Then you shuffle for real

Oh damn, these comics are a blast from the past

Exaggerating to an unrealistic degree, if being good at Magic is important to you, or even part of your identity, and an environment undermines your abilities you could see it as undermining your identity. I suspect it's like, the most minor version of that

I don't know if I would say "highly competitive" even. Another example is feeling that Cogwork Librarians throw off draft heuristics about wheels. Definitely not everyone and it's not like I've had anyone be upset about it, but you can sometimes sense the unease

Example: I was asked if Hogaak is supported in my cube. talking through what that meant the answer was no, because you cant consistently get Hogaak out on turn 3. Hogaak is good in my cube, it just doesn't function like constructed. It's interesting hearing the expectations people bring along

Yeah "doing the same thing at the same table"

I have a very shallow understanding of board games, but the players in Wingspan feel far more sandboxed away from each other than games I would think of as Euro games like Parks, Tokaido, or Catan, which allow a lot more indirect interference

(I am not badmouthing Wingspan)
comment in response to post
This kind of makes me want to play Rummikub. Also, more interactive than Wingspan

Aaaaaand here it is

Minimizing cost is hard to talk about cuz the best approach is taking cards you own and then filling in gaps. If you're not doing that, it's tough to buy any 360 specific cards for under $100, between minimums, sales taxes, and shipping, even if the TCG low of the cube ends up being like $15

At one point I looked at conference finalists for the "Behind the Net" era and it seemed like much more often than not you got 3 teams that were among the very best in the league and then a 4th who obviously got lucky. The conference finals were usually the end of the road for those teams

Point being, I you can do it and it won't be bad, but it will have an effect

My Forbidden Trash cube is 3 packs of 13 for 6 players, and it definitely feels different, but not bad different

Most LGSs around here won't sell singles for less than $0.25, so maybe you need to cut yourself some slack? The only possible $50 might be one made from cards people already have

I have started writing this and hope to finish a draft shortly (today? Tomorrow?) so I can post it early next week. Like this reply if you're up for pre-reading

Totally! No disagreement, just a half-serious observation about how those differences are evident in bookshelves, even though it's not always a clean divide
comment in response to post
I agree, and have found "sorted by artist/author" versus "sorted by protagonist" as a glib but pretty telling shortcut for identifying which side of that gulf they're on
comment in response to post
They're all comics, you just need to ask if they're sorted by creator, or by publisher & character

Heard a great take once that "virtue signalling" is good: there is value in communicating what is virtuous!
