🤩

Did you know that when zebrafish swim, this motion evokes calcium signals in their *blood vessels*? Bill Jia and Xin Tang showed that this effect is mediated by Piezo1, and only requires physical motion, not neural activity or blood flow.

Looking forward 🤩!

I was looking at WHO's data on baby growth: in the first 4 months, babies grow cubically (weight ~ length^3), as one may expect for a 3D object. Then, the baby's length quickly outgrows their weight, settling to to a power ~1.8 after 2 years-old. Anyone knows what controls this transition?

This is so cool! PS, Terence Tao would sound perfectly normal if you play the video at x0.75😁

It just works, magically 😁

Giving a talk at Penn tomorrow!🙌 In the same room I defended my PhD thesis😲 www.chem.upenn.edu/events/2025/...

Excited to share this new work led by postdoc Brendan Floyd, deep mapping of cell-surface protein interactomes of T and B cells reveals maverick mitochondrial proteins and immune modulatory complexes. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Right on time to report that our first paper Biophysical Reports has been cited 100 times (according to google scholar)! The first author Huan Wang is at #bps2025, check out what she has been working on 🙌 @joergenderlein.bsky.social

In a recent collaboration with Hao Lin's lab, we studied the relation between cell-cell adhesion and cortical mechanics!

Thrilled to share our recent work on the power of RNA to encode physical information and how this can be embedded in the genetic code www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Would be helpful to add a butterfly button for sharing the article 😂 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

#biochemistry101 Why do people say Histidine is positively charged at pH 7.4 (Fig. 1, from Wikipedia), while the analysis of species suggest it should be basically uncharged (Fig. 2)?

Happy new year! 2025 is a pretty cool number: www.numbersaplenty.com/2025

Really cool finding in mitochondria! We saw reversible tension-induced pearling on neuronal axons (www.science.org/doi/full/10....). More generally, pearling can easily triggered by (suddenly) stretching a membrane tube😁

Here’s a Christmas present for y’all: a new physics post! I’ve done these things on “the other side”—let’s see how many people are interested on 🦋! I’ll be talking about a famous principle in classical mechanics: that of “least action.” And I’ll tell you why it’s a misnomer! Buckle up! 1/26

How proximal is proximity labeling❓ Using DNA nanorulers we found that TurboID/BioID are largely contact labeling, while APEX2 also bears a major contact labeling pathway in parallel with diffusive labeling. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Special thanks to @aliceyting.bsky.social for discussions

Dear colleagues, sorry for delays and typos in my email 😹

An interesting note in mechanics !

If some calcium enters a dendrite, how far does it diffuse? Rebecca Frank Hayward (who is on the job market!) measured this. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... She combined a blue light-activated Ca++ channel with a red-fluorescent Ca++ sensor. The length constant is about 5 microns.

Q: What's wrong with these plots? A: Pooling cell-level measurements across multiple runs conceals experimental reproducibility. Read more in JCB (with @fritzlaylin.bsky.social @katrinavelle.bsky.social & Dyche Mullins): rupress.org/jcb/article/...

Excited to share our latest findings, now published @NatureNeuro www.nature.com/articles/s41... We found unmyelinated axons exhibit pearls-on-a-string morphology's due to their membrane mechanical properties. Threads will follow!
