they're republicans doing less to deny their shitty nature, effectively. ironically, not because they're more honest- just because they're even LESS self-aware and more pretentious in many areas.
It seems that most people misunderstand what anarchism actually is, and I feel that it's often intentional so they don't have to actually defend *against* anarchist ideals
I can admit I was a libertarian, it was a brief, and stupid rest stop on my path from conservative shitposting troll to principled liberal who will probably end up in politics or prison by the time this administration is done
"The trilogy received predominantly negative critic reviews.[3] Further, the aggregate earnings in the USA box office is just under $9 million, with each film performing worse than the last on both accounts."
That's the issue with the people adapting the book, they think the good part is the story of Dagny Taggart, which is really a terrible person and has love stories that pack as much eroticism as a pack of marlboro left outside in the rain.
But libertarian "thinkers" are so afraid of freedom that they can't even think that love between two men who can't be together because of societys judgment is the real background action going on in that terrible book.
At least that's the only interesting part I read in that awful book.
It's about rich people going missing, turns out they're all in a commune where they farm land in the mountains.
But a special commune, where everyone is a dick and only works for themselves.
Without the rich industrialists, the US turns into chaos.
The funniest part is all the people saying it's a great book that should be followed.
Well go ahead then, I'm sure the world would be a better place if the richest men on earth started farming in the mountains instead of financing fascism and overall bothering the rest of us.
Libertarians are the most delusional boys and male centered girls. Children who think they have solved it all with simple subtraction. Their thin cover for racism doesn’t stretch to their backsides where they put the disabled and special needs citizens. They would have them dead. Just asshats.
Libertarianism has pretty much always has been driven by selfish behaviors. Otherwise if they really cared about individual rights they'd be more progressive.
It's always been "I'm not allowed to do what I *REALLY* want to do." Just that what that is can range from drugs to the extremely illegal.
I laugh but CATO Institute has put out some great studies. I noticed their site is shifting with the new administration. Hopefully they keep up the good work.
I read a bunch of libertarian arguments as a teenager that sounded like arguments for democratic socialism, except with an underpants-gnome pivot to “therefore libertarianism is obviously correct” at the very end
I’ve been enjoying reading all the comments in this thread, this is the best one. I’ve said “phase 3 is profit” so many times, underpants -gnome pivot is a great term.
libertarianism as a coherent position falls apart when asking simple questions like “should there be voter ID laws”
theres a debate btwn those who believe in election fraud and those who don’t, with the consensus being “Yes, if the government provides them for free” which seems anti-libertarian
Teenager thought he was a Republican. I explained he was a Libertarian, why that was bad, and in a fee months was a low level liberal with “concerns.”
It’s a process.
If you're around my age, having a cringey libertarian phase was basically a rite of passage for any politically engaged teen in the late 90s/early 2000s
As someone who's friends with like 5 libertarians, idk, some people even with life experience still like libertarianism. Kinda cool, but also, kinda cringe.
(L)ibertarian - Republicans who are better at lying because they are clever sociopaths.
(l)ibertarian - unicorns who cut off their own horns to pass as donkeys and vote blue... for now. Holding a candle for decriminalized drugs, sex-work & taxing churches.
you know that anime thing where the guy does an iaido draw and you don't see it and then the katana clicks back into the scabbard and then everybody's head falls off
I think there’s a weird kind of unspoken spectrum in libertarianism where some kinda naively expect a democratic kind of meritocracy and others are rigidly hierarchical, and there isn’t a clear defining line but the fascist resurgence has created a really effective sniff test
Selfish... and thoughtless. The libertarian template relieves the adoptee of almost any critical thinking beyond "what do I want" and "what is good for me" and "let me do whatever I want".
I read Atlas Shrugged more than a few times when I was young, sad to say. At first I loved it. On each subsequent reading, I realized what a pile of horse shit it was. Until finally I tore it to pieces and discarded it. Growing up is a bitch sometimes.
My high school history teacher saw me reading it and went “Ayn Rand. *snort.*” I stopped reading during the interminable radio speech, but I’m sure that light bit of ridicule helped.
Who puts a 50+ page speech in the middle of a novel? Seriously. John Galt would have gone totally hoarse by page 15 or 20. The weird thing is, Rand had written The Fountainhead first, which has pretty much the same message but was written a lot better. After that Rand seems to have regressed.
Here in Europe, I was taught that libertarian just means the opposite of authoritarian and manifests in loads of different ways. Then I met American libertarians and heard "pensions are theft!!"(??!) for the first time, what a trip. Also apparently abortions violate the NAP more than child rape does
I used to kinda of follow him because he is nothing if not entertaining but always wondered when he would come around.
His politics always seemd like he got to the wrong answer using the right formula. His heart was in the right place but the ideas just don't mesh with reality. Glad he's out.

now anarchists would be disgusted to have the word used for us
I've read it cover to cover, it's a crime against litterature.
And even edited with an axe, it would become at most a half-decent pulp sci-fi.
Would make decent Yaoi.
It couldn't even be a decent movie series.
To make it good, you have to turn it into a gay rom-com about two men in love, separated by a heteronormative society.
Go full-on in the Francisco/Hank Rearden romance.
Francis/Hank is where the smart action is at.
At least that's the only interesting part I read in that awful book.
But a special commune, where everyone is a dick and only works for themselves.

Everyone in it is a caricature.
Suddenly you're on page 50 of Galt's speech and thinking "OKAY! WE GET IT, YOU SAID THIS FOUR TIMES ALREADY."
Best part is how it's modern disciples think they're the makers and not the moochers.
Well go ahead then, I'm sure the world would be a better place if the richest men on earth started farming in the mountains instead of financing fascism and overall bothering the rest of us.
Incredible.
Such beauty.
Never forget
It's always been "I'm not allowed to do what I *REALLY* want to do." Just that what that is can range from drugs to the extremely illegal.
"That is a God-damn efficient joke"
My wife uses a booster seat to drive her car.
🔥 you playing with fire!

God, I remember when I used to actually identify with the libertarians (it's been 20 years & I was young/dumb, I'm learning).
It’s a process.
We all did it, nothing to be ashamed of
We settled on Campagna for our campus event because Badnarik wasn't available.
Glad we both grew out of it
Also side note, did you know Badnarik died!? Just looked up what he was up to these days and... yeesh
Endangering everyone by distracting the driver and most likely obstructing views and/or controls, such as the brake.
Best case they're both passengers, but still a dangerous situation should anything happen.
I'm sure they were there, but they weren't just mask-off!
Not that we didn't still have a lot of stupid & ignorant ideas, just less immediate vomit inducing.
We worked in state government. He never did appreciate the irony. I did bring it up every time I saw him, though.

That it is meaning what I would call a booster seat because to me all the seats in the car are car seats.
