One of my D&D campaigns (yes, I run two, what of it) is in the home stretch after three years of playing. On one hand, I've got to draw all those threads together to make a satisfying conclusion, which is a nice narrative design challenge.
On the other, I have no plan for what comes after. None. π₯΄

Or one done by more former colleagues, James Ohlen, Jesse Skye, and Drew Karpyshyn.

Best way to describe it is I go from the first to the third step if that makes sense.
It might just be me getting inside my own head too.
My one though always has 3-5k worth of notes, a shitton of exposition, painted minis (I'm trying to work my way up to terrain), and has a huge three arc narrative thought of. Not planned - its D&D. You know how it is.
1. Swear to do it never again.
2. Do it again, but 7 years later
Can't get too attached to any plans!
Congrats on three years. That is an accomplishment.
My current plan on the campaign I am running now, is to take 40 years, through 4 trilogies. Writing the books while we are playing, there is always material to get inspired by.
