He was the only Howard brother with a significant Hollywood career apart from the stooges. Although his work was often edited to the bone, most of his costars (including Lou Costello and W. C. Fields) claimed that he was always hilariously funny on set.

I just saw a few minutes of Shemp and the gag was that his foot was literally smoking hot, such that when he put it in a basin of water it started to boil…the series of expressions on his face as he soaked his foot—confusion, pain, alarm, comfort—was really quite something
