I’m currently filling out some depression/anxiety/general psychological disorder questionnaires so it’s extremely well timed to remind that yes, I DO hear some noises others don’t xD in general I love that video, it has such a simple way of explaining overstimulation despite it feeling overwhelming

For me the ‘focal point’ of what I’m mostly paying attention to can also easily be stolen by a noise elsewhere in the space, and it takes me a beat to realise I’m no longer focused on what the other person is saying.

This actually is relatable. Usually when i get very overstimulated it physically hurts my ears after more than 10 minutes.

Just fyi there is also another auditory condition called "hyperacusis" - For me the restaurant kitchen noises physically hurt my ears and feels like I'm being stabbed in the eardrum, like actual physical sharp pain there. It's fairly common in autistic people (40-60%) but completely underdiagnosed.

This is really interesting as someone whos not autistic. For me it's closer to the second but the other noises just add to the general volume of the room. Doesn't make focusing easier though and I'm screwed if there a TV anywhere in eyeshot. That could be the undiagnosed ADHD though.

My friends used to tell me they thought I had hearing problems, so I went to the Dr. And they told me my hearing is above average. It wasn't until I realized I'm neurodivergent that it clicked that sound overstimulated me. Your video sums up my experience exactly, thank you for putting it together.

I’m 53 and not formally diagnosed as autistic (tho I have no doubt).

What I was diagnosed with, as a child, was sensory processing/integration disorder.
This was once recognized as a distinct syndrome. It isn’t any longer but perhaps should be.

This was recognized for me in the early 70s because my step-grandmother was a pioneer in the field: pediatric occupational therapist A. Jean Ayres.
She identified it and I was fortunate to get treatment in her clinic as a kid.

Her work has fallen out of fashion and her ideas have been subsumed into the larger body of autism spectrum work. But some folks who identify with this video may find her writings to be a useful resource. I did, even as an adult.

I often don't notice how annoyed or upset I am until the noises stop; eg. turning off a loud fan or music gives me a sense of relief. Getting to turn off extra lights/aircon/music at my workplace in the evening makes me realise how loud they were all day
