Nothing like being awakened by your PC turning on by itself 3 times a row in the middle of the night because it wants to UPDATE so you forcefully pull the plug in your half-asleep state because some things are just too scary at night π

Go to control panel, view by large icons, power options, change plugged in pull downs to Never, go to advance & never, then go to services, look for windows update & disable, turn on screen saver. Your PC was never off, it was in sleep mode. Microsoft can turn back on but you'd have a few days.
I had the issue way back when I slept in the same room as the computer, you can set it up so it doesn't wake up because it senses a phantom input from the USB or for updates.
That depends on what you use it for. If you want to use cron jobs, network shares and docker, then it will be harder... but lots of people use very little of what their computer can do for them.
I installed the first instance of UNIX outside Bell Labs. Windows is a lot more convenient.
Having gone through every iteration of Windows one does learn how to deal with it.
Ya know, what you call "turning on" is waking from sleep. A machine that is properly shut down will not power itself on without BIOS flags from LAN or a timer to do so.
Iβve done something like that before, but instead of an update to my PC, it was with a CRT TV when I was a kid. It turned on by itself and went to a blue screen like 3 times in one night and scared the hell out of me. I ended up unplugging it in my half awake stupor. Weirdly it never did it again.
You turned on automatic updates then got upset that it tried to automatically update?! Your computer wasnβt off, it was sitting idle, and installing updates in the middle of the night is normal when idle, because that means itβs likely not interrupting your using the PC.
This would scare me more if it was a robot, and I unplugged it, then it kept updating via wifi, then I shut my wifi off, and it found an open node to use, so then I shut off its network interface. β¦.and went back to sleep.
If my computer ever turned itself on when it was supposed to be off it would loudly and rapidly become scrap metal, no spooky spirits in my machines tyvm
My old Windows XP computer did this a couple of times at night π it was scary because the Windows XP sound would wake up my family in the middle of the night and I was pretty sure the updates were not schedule for the night time...
I often forget Windows is still a thing, and every time I see a mention like this Iβm like βOh wow, but why?β Itβs like not using an ad blocker π€·
This is when you realise how many things can be activated by one cat's arse on the keyboard in the middle of the night.
And in the panic you drop your glasses somewhere and the cat is blocking the screen anyway!

Thereβs a good reason Iβve stayed within the Apple environment (where possible) for so longβ¦
βIt just works!β LOL Just kidding! Never believe that!
βIt mostly just works with much less stress!β Thatβs better!
This is why I run Linux.
it does this bc of a feature called fast startup, which kind of makes it so shutting it down doesn't actually shut it down and i HATE it omg

I have Pop_OS and it's fine. It's based on Ubuntu and a lot of games works too. Half of the time I don't know exactly what I'm doing tho.
Is this a notebook you just closed the lid on?
It's just advanced settings for power. Deactivate the ability for some outputs to wake up the computer.
There are step-by-steps available to find where it's at.
do you know how to get some
This is probably caused by 'Fast Startup' being enabled.
This hibernates your PC instead of shutting down, meaning the bloody thing never actually turns off.
This should work for Windows 10 and 11

Standard is middle of the night so it's not shutting down while you're working (or prompting you to).
I use TempleOS btw
Noted.
