Got hit by one of these (though I'm hardly high-profile) yesterday morning calling itself Doug Emhoff. Wanted to talk me into some crypto scheme or other. It was early in the morning, and took me a while to realise it was a bot.

There's also a lot of phone scams lately, The attackers can use spoofing to imitate emails and phone numbers now. It's getting worse imho.

Cheers for the heads up, X really should be reprimanded for this. Place is awash with crypto scammers and everything.

Got a similar message on an instagram account, supposedly from meta. Wanted me to click some random link to appeal, or they’d disable my account within 48 hours.

Told them to go right ahead and block the account. That was 31/01/25.

It’s now 06/02/25.
Quick check reveals the account is still live.

Had a similar situation with Royal Mail. I was actually expecting a parcel, and there really was a problem with the postcode.

But why would Royal Mail contact me from a Hotmail account?

Turns out that one was the scam that requires you to disable automatic SMS link blocking on your device.

One of the failings of the online safety bill is that it doesn't tackle this type of behaviour

Government policy ought to put an end to this type of behaviour with, multi-national agreements to identify those responsible, prosecute and jail them

I always check the sender’s email address if it’s not something I recognise. Not foolproof but a lot of the time it’s obviously dodgy.
