I think the other way around. A lot of Ras’ black urban vote goes to whichever normie dem the local establishment is backing if he isn’t running. Ras’ white progressive vote would be more likely to back Fulop if he wasn’t running and vice versa

The reality is neither had a shot as long as the other was in the race. In RCV, they could have worked together. Under RCV, if Baraka would have run on what he ran on but also promote ranking Sherrill as the number 2, that seems pretty weird, but also a lot of his voters would hate him for it.

RCV would also change behavior. If we had that, there is a lot less incentive for Baraka to attack Fulop and focus much more on growing the pie and work together to attack Sherrill.

We are seeing this in the NYC race where it's everyone vs Cuomo. Mamdani is providing real support to competitors.

But to be honest, I do think it's a mistake for RCV in the primary but not have it in the general. The much bigger cancer is the false choice created by all this national politics noise. Trenton truly is broken, and the NJ state Dems love it whenever there is a Federal crisis to distract from that.

The NYC commission evaluating RCV decided to not use it in the general by one vote, and with the vote splitting they are headed for in November, it is going to be clear that was a mistake.
