I have a coworker who is obsessed with it and it just did not appeal to me but this is the first time I've heard someone who had seen it speak negatively and the comments explaining seem to be on par with what I was afraid of not liking about it, so thank you for that. XD
I had this discussion with a mate recently. I got through the first season, I laughed, I rolled my eyes a bit. It was ok. Come season 2 I couldn't even hack the premise anymore. I can take ridiculous shit happening within a realistic premise, but this just took things too far.
I liked Ted Lasso, but I think it overextended itself (literally). The first season was great - approx. 30 minute episodes, as were there first half of season 2, then they started stretching into 40+ minutes, until in season 3 we started getting 1 hour+ episodes.
... this is something that I think works well with Shrinking - all the episodes, bar the season 2 finale which clocks in a 44 minutes are within sight of the 30 minute mark.
For reasons, I used NotebookLM to create the audio overview of the Roy Kent chant on YouTube. Very amusing, but a clear example of why I'm not spending a penny for AI technology.
The problem is it started as a comedy and morphed into a drama. I don't find myself giving a shit about sitcom characters. Curb for me, don't waste my time with manufactured drama.
As a fan of the show, the entire show is about trauma and mental health. If they missed out on that, what did they watch? Are you saying it’s not good because Ted’s character is lying to himself about who he is for the majority of 3 seasons?
I’m saying it’s a fine show, but it’s not the greatest thing on the planet. As far as bill lawrence shows go, it’s not even in my top 3 favorite shows.
A lot of people seem to make Ted their personality and ignore the very real demons he had.
This. I found the Nick/Ted relationship to be the only satisfying payoff in the whole show. Betrayal always yields the best redemption arc when resolved. I did not give a good goddamn about anyone else.
I'd agree that Ted Lasso lost the plot well before Season 3, and basically did that thing all sitcoms do where it became a caricature of itself, but Lasso did it way earlier than most others do. I think the first season is still quite good. It shouldn't be getting a fourth season, though.
Starburst candies are little blocks of solidified, fruit flavored, nectar of the gods and any assertion to the contrary flies in the face of logic, decency, and good taste. How dare you, sir? How dare you!
(I may or may not share your opinion on Ted Lasso though - haven't watched it yet.)
We really liked season 1, started season 2 and then never cared enough to go back which illustrates that there is often a big difference between what people think they like and what they actually like. (The candy bar test: What's your favorite candy bar? Snickers. What do you actually buy? Payday.)
Whoah whoah. Who are these people choosing Payday over almost *any* other candy bar, never-mind Snickers? (Maybe Three Musketeers would lose head to head?) They’re what you get at your weird friend’s house.
That’s a different argument although in that case I’d just get something else entirely. I don’t hate Payday, but it’s never going to be picked over another choice.
This is how I've felt about all of AppleTV+: plenty of the shows are enjoyable once they are on. But bothering to choose between them, and, alternatives, I would probably never offer up those made by Apple because they aren't the first that I think of.
I’m not sure about Ted Lasso, but I categorically disagree on Starbursts! Starbursts are definitely good candy! A tier easily (though maybe not S tier candy like peanut butter cups).
In the second season premiere I thought they were making an in-joke when the dog got killed by a soccer ball and the piano notes and slow zoom ushered in Ted's commentary afterwards
I felt like it suffered from an affliction that a lot of recent TV shows have. They come in with a tight season 1, and then in season 2 they try to meander through all the characters without adding additional episodes.
Ted Lasso was the show we needed during COVID. The first two seasons were spectacular, but the third definitely fell off. But to say it's not a "good show" is just a bad take.
Am I the only one who remembers Action? The Studio is fine (and clearly made with a huge amount of love), but it makes me miss the guilty-pleasure version.
Well, it's more "Not that bad a show" than "Not that good a show" at the very least. And Starbursts are terrible. Sure they tasted great when you were 10. But then you grow up and realize they taste like flavored wax. Lasso had some charm and some laughs. Especially welcome at a bad time for society
Conversely, Mystic Quest routinely surprises. It almost never surfaces as something I want to watch, but every time I do, I come away impressed at the quality of the writing.
I was filled with such despair when Ted Lasso ended, I loved it so much. I don't watch many positive/affirming shows but this one got me. And I'm not a sports person either! Or a British humor person for that matter.
I guess the only real connection point for me was the struggle & the humanity.
I see a lot of people love Shrinking, but for a non American audience Shrinking is pretty ho-hum. Season 3 of Ted lasso was a huge disappointment after the glory of the first two seasons but shrinking just does come anywhere near it for me.
I identified with loss of spouse/grief & have positive past associations w many of the actors on Shrinking-so better than ho-hum for me, but can't speak to the cultural differences.
But I agree w you, it's no Lasso. To go from having Lasso to not having Lasso was a tough adjustment. 🥹 Miss it.

At the risk of going against the tide here, I couldn't agree more. The short still makes me laugh. Whereas I gave up on the show midway through the second season. There is nothing wrong with "feel good" shows, but it just felt like it's missing that comedic edge.
A comedy show doesn’t need to be funnier than a SNL skit to be good. Laughs are just a part of it.
I watch Ted Lasso for the same reason I watch The Great British Baking Show, The Good Placed, or hell, Forged in Fire. Because sometimes I want something that offers an undertone of good vibes.
To compare Ted Lasso comedic value to that of its SNL source, feels a lot like saying that the opening scenes from The Office are the pinnacle of the series.
All European football fans love it, all of them, I also don't like basketball or American football movies/series, that's the issue with you not liking it.
Ted Lasso was good because of when it came out. It’s like if you hadn’t had any candy in 10 years and then had a Starburst. That starburst would be the best candy you ever tasted.
Idk I really enjoyed season 1, then season 2 and 3 were such miserable experience that overstayed its welcome that it kinda retroactively made me feel "meh" to the whole thing.
One day I might rewatch s1 again and just pretend s2/3 never happened lol
Haha. That one was a riot. I did finish it. But yeh overall it became e melancholic storytelling. Which is fine. But I did not sign up for it with this one.

Nothing else, always ted lasso.
I’ve never watched an episode but I loathe it.
30 minutes is a good episode time.
I respectfully disagree....
It was too slap-sticky for me..
I liked SCHITTS CREEK so much more!
And I agree. People making Ted their personality missed the point that he was covering up A LOT of trauma with his schtick.
A lot of people seem to make Ted their personality and ignore the very real demons he had.
Just a nice little sugary hit every now and then.
Not everything has to be cordon bleu.
It's as if it were written as a high school sports drama, and after revisions, it became something for adults, but the characters remained unchanged.
They're ridiculous children with one-dimensional arcs, and I just can't.
THANKS.
Starburst is great and everybody loves it and you’re treating it like Laffy Taffy.
(I may or may not share your opinion on Ted Lasso though - haven't watched it yet.)
I found it astonishing.
You don’t like Ted Lasso fine. But the laughs aren’t really the point.
Please don’t do a long form post about it, though. Please!
I guess the only real connection point for me was the struggle & the humanity.
I like Shrinking more.
But I agree w you, it's no Lasso. To go from having Lasso to not having Lasso was a tough adjustment. 🥹 Miss it.
Which shows are in your top 3?

AAAAAAAAaaaaaaahhhhhHHHHHHH!!!
the huge hype just never matches the reality
The acting, the plot.. it’s all just kinda mediocre at best.
One day I might rewatch s1 again and just pretend s2/3 never happened lol
A quick sugar high that leaves you wanting something a little more “stick-to-your-ribs.”
