Surely this new video won't make me seem like a crank.

Not only have you spent years educating and breaking down complex subjects, but you've also been a consistent voice of reason.
We need more people like you.
It'd be nice if we still had the capability in the browser though, so we weren't beholden to Big Tech for curation.
My 1st experience with a computer was a console where I just had to push buttons until something happens, and then take notes. Just like Minecraft!
I almost exclusively use the sub feed, but sometimes when I hit the homepage the newest video from any of the subbed channels will appear in the top row and I click on it. Probably that lowers those rates.
Also a pretty interesting video. Lots to think about I guess.
I think it needs to be stressed that curation itself, is a very responsible task. Its bewildering to me that big-tech-corps seem so okay with not checking their curation diligently. Especially when they know how users try
It's wild that we let this happen.
I am happy to have put you into my feed.
Worried cheers from Germany
you know, history 'n' stuff...)
If it’s not an odd question, do you have plans to publish a transcript of it? I’d love to be able to quote and point people towards it (just colleagues etc - I’m not famous) - including those who won’t watch a 38min video.
I think people just forgot how to YouTube after 2009.
Like, "Wait, there's an alternative?! Please tell me about it!!!" Then you revealed the answer and I was like, "Oh that thing? I mean I guess, but..."
The more I think about it though, the more sense it makes.
The 1st version I typed I even talked about bookmarking the subs and use only that.
I'm still halfway through but I can't contain myself.
About shorts: if u don't mind using an extension to edit CSS (I use Stylebot) these lines will hide them:
display: none;
}
You can also do the same but with UPCOMING instead of SHORTS.
Great to see you here. :)
**You should NEVER trust code people post on the internet if you don't know what you are doing.
Thanks for calling out the NYT piece. "Our list of allies grows thin."
But I had the thought that I wanna hunt down your videos (you helped me change how I use my dishwasher).
I love managing my own flow. It's so fun! I have started thinking that maybe algorithms doing it for me was never really my thing.
Glad the radio works!
constructive criticism is appreciated.
One aspect of context collapse is, even if you find people who you haven't met before in the Algorithm, there's no guarantee that you'll ever see them, again, which further disincentivizes building context and connection with these people. It trains lack of care.
Google likes to make it very hard to stay prvt
You've earned a new subscriber; I'm quite interested in watching your other videos now!
I remember when we could sort Facebook by mice recent. They took that feature away and now I can't find it. My feed is about 80% advertising now anyway
They are so successful I hear they have run out of cardboard boxes in the back of Aldi to carry all their ad sense revenue.

The uBlockOrigin "zap" ⚡ is a fun way to Mario Paint minigame the algorithm-funneling ui away. It should have a keyboard shortcut.
Thank you for expressing vague thoughts i had for a while now in such a clear way!
(Also, most cans here have the pull tab, so there's not much use for a can opener)
I don't miss the Home page and the sidebar now actually gives me relevant videos.
Though, to be fair, the only reason I even switched to this app was because you mentioned you were on it so I could follow lmao
Also, if I'm in any way representative of your fanbase, you cannot possibly get too crotchety for us. Fly that cranky flag!
1: 3% is not a good interpretation of total subscription page users. That doesn’t include sub users who find it through homepage first, place it on watch later, direct link from a friend, direct bookmark, etc.
2: Twitter following and BlueSky following works the same
Great video!
The loss of independent forums where we discuss what we see carefully and challenge negative [sic] attachments is terrifying.
I've begun reading "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" which goes deep into this topic.
As a fellow creator the algorithm is a monkeys paw I think.
I’m not sure I would have ever searched “old timey toaster” but YouTube decided I might like it 😆
Kidding, well only half kidding. Along with people blindly following algos people now are waaaaayy to trusting with info they put on the internet.
I'm older than you, and have always curated my own internet experience. I have niche hobbies and interests, and have always done my own deep dive into research on subject.
I agree: putting in the work to adopt non-algorithmic platforms was worth it. I took the plunge to Mastodon+Bluesky a couple of years ago (including switching to Linux for my OS, and Kagi+DuckDuckGo for searching); it feels better to use, and for myself mentally.
That's my excuse!
I've been told I have an old soul though so idk...
Algorithmic choice like on bsky is an important step into the right direction there.
But this is likely atypical, I hear people often complain about the sort of thing they do actualy have control over.
Also giving more clear and direct ways to set the filter knobs. It shouldn't ever be a blackbox that you have to infer from
I guide as many students as I can, but there are times that I have to tell them to search processes or concepts on their phones. They open Instagram.
My comment here is uncharacteristic as I normally do not engage because frankly it feels weird to comment publicly. Like being self aware enough that many of us are not in fact in a conversation together.
😳 *hides again*
(also real on the feeling weird commenting on public threads)
I just wish there was a better app for riding my bicycle. I swear Google is trying to get me killed.
Examples:
Alleyways with few options to get out of the ways of cars and bad lighting at night.
Dirt/gravel paths not meant for bikes
Highways >_>
Etc...
It's interesting how the complacency you mentioned is a result of content centralization. Before the social media boom, we had tens of thousands of content creators on their own websites.
I wonder what would be needed to reverse some of this. We have tools like WordPress, Squarespace, etc.
that allow anyone to create a website simply, but we no longer have a simple way to make this content visible (or searchable) to the general public.
I think about StumbleUpon and RSS Feeds and how something like that nowadays could somewhat change the scenario. Great video anyway.
Also feel that the algorithm fosters drama.
Well, okay, that and great explanations for things that are very approachable and just the right level of obsessive with a dash (well a lot) of excellent snark and crankiness when appropriate.
"What information do people need?"
Is a much better approach. Don't try to sell a solution, eliminate problems for customers.
I don’t disagree your question is morally better. It’s not just the question incentives fit.
If people don't have clothes they are not going to buy dressers.
There aren't really any morals.
Trying BS (wow that's probably not the Acronym they're looking for) to see if it'll be better having the discover vs following side.
Especially when the original poster can just search for the solution themselves or simply (and frequently) just Read The Manual. “ What is this ? “, “ help! I’ve pressed this how do I …. ?”
not enough people are trying to shore up the importance of human connection, and I really appreciate you doing so.
You've put into words my issues with algorithms and the AI that is touted way too often for comfort. I've been trying to explain my feelings to myself for a while
You've made me realise although I've gotten better with trying to get myself out of the slop hole. I still have a ways to go.
Excellent video.
Really though that is the best way to use youtube.
Anecdotally: I'm lucky enough to live near a thriving movie rental place. When I started going there, the experience of physically picking something was a shock– it restored an interest in movies I didn't know I had lost.
Time to go find a conversation to jump into without any context or nuance.
Not much to do but agree in my crotchety late-30s myself.
Certainly wish there were better (at least more obvious) tools factoring that.
You articulated what I couldn't and it's empowering 💪
Please keep up the good work and never sacrifice your integrity
Happy to say The Ban immediately broke me of that app’s habit. Conscious of trying to stick to subscription feeds more now.
Every time I see that one of my classmates says "let me look it up" and goes to Chatgpt a big part of me dies
I have friends who do this all the time with everything - or just go with what google AI says. Instead of clicking results. Big oof. Chatgpt is not the answer. Sure it's a resource. But use it wisely, if anything it's a starting point. Not an ending point.
READ THE GODDANM CHAPTER
Keep up the good work. And yell at clouds as needed.
I always am the type that checks followed posts/content first and then noodles around in the discover or you you pages if I have extra time.
But uhhh I'm also not part of this target audience. Anyway great content as always! :)
Unrelated, I sort of have a hypothesis that you and Captain Disillusion are the same person. Also, thanks for recommending me this app in your new video.
Me: What?
TC: You know that...right?
