I thought I had found the settings, but it was only "what kind of crappy do you want?" And in an entirely different place in the menu was the option to turn it off.
Meanwhile I watch stuff on one of the streaming services and it turns it off for Me with a little notice? I can’t remember if it’s Apple or a different one
Most TV's aimed at people with taste have Filmmaker mode. So the 2018 Vizio (don't ever buy one, please) had it. My 2020 LG had it, and my 2024 LG has it. I'm sure Sony's have it.
Best when combined with an OLED panel. I watched Lawrence of Arabia Sunday. Pure movie heaven.
Oh - but also Samsung TVs sometimes don't apply the settings across all the installed apps, so you might find you have to change it again for some of them. Annoying.
They’re hated by those that know, but those that don’t either say it’s good or have nothing to say, so they probably get significantly more praise than not. Having said that they should be ones that know so maybe they just wanna watch the world burn with “enhanced motion”
It's infuriating. Like I just said to someone else, I can only assume it's the result of a deal with sports broadcasters, as it's designed for live sports.
which itself is so mindboggling. i feel like it started on display tvs at like best buy. maybe they felt like tvs looked more impressive with it (colors, clarity, etc)
There is, in fact, a sort of secret preset that is meant for use in store that tries to make the picture look more appealing by cranking a lot of settings too high. It's not meant for home use and is usually only activated with special button presses. Sometimes a tv can be on this by accident
Probably driven more by what they license for the demo modes than actual broadcasters, but the use of Live Sports Picture as a selling point may very well be why they default this trash to on.
dang it never even occurred to me that you’d need a license for display models but that’s probably because we hijacked the in store tvs in the virgin megastore i worked in to play the phantom menace trailer for a month straight
Uh oh. I just bought a new Samsung tv for my husband’s birthday. Guess I’ll have to hurry up and figure out how to fix it when my son and I set it up this weekend.
It’s pretty tough to find on LGs! And I’ve had to turn it off multiple times because different inputs and different devices default to different settings… it’s very dumb.

Took me far too long...

I have a Samsung and don’t have this issue but I don’t remember if I set some feature or not when I first set up my TV.
As to why anyone would *want* a movie to look like a soap opera, I got nothin.
