Morality questions aside: is it worth planting seeds in THIS soil, in this moment? Does it seem likely to pay off? So many alternatives!

Self-hosted Ghost sites have no fees. The only thing you’ll have to pay for is hosting and, likely, a mail service. Mine ends up costing <$5/month and Ghost takes zero cut of my (small) earnings from paid subs. It ends up being cheaper overall.

I've been wanting to move for months but I don't intend to ever monetize my newsletter and I simply can't justify a monthly fee for 500 subscribers. I'm at a loss, to be honest.

For what it’s worth, my self-hosted site with about 1,000 free subs generally costs me <$5/month.

You could also look into Beehiiv or Buttondown.

Well F***. So much for Independent Social networking grounded in ethics. I cannot and will not support anyone who thinks Nazi's should get a equal voice on the platform. A group/person's rights ends where they harm others which is the starting point for Nazis/white supremacists etc.

Lol CPanel is usually the pain in the a$$, navigating inside of it is not fun.

Installing Google Analytics and having the location be messed up with my hosting service.... but they are good and have been using for over a decade.

The best place to start is @wes.readonlymemo.com's Substack -> Ghost migration tutorial. If you're comfortable hosting a website, already have a URL, etc., it's all fairly straightforward. The trickiest part is setting up the DNS records to point at the new site.

If I were to do this again, I'd personally skip the pikapods integration and just set up Ghost on my existing server. Pikapods is GREAT, but it's an extra step that isn't necessary for me specifically because I've got good existing web infrastructure for my website, etc.

I didn’t read it yet but quick question for monetizing. Does ghost offer payment processing or do you just go through a third party or something? I think the most appealing thing about patreon/substack is probably the credit card/handling secure information processing aspect

It uses Stripe—which I prefer over giving a newsletter provider access to subscriber credit card information. I already had that set up for payment processing, so connecting the two was a breeze.

glad to hear this. people also should be aware that Beehiiv, like Substack, is a capitalist-owned labor-exploiting company, unlike Ghost, which is a nonprofit (if you don't want to self-host)

Ghost doesn't collect any fees. You'll need a webhost (which might be whatever you use for your website, for instance) and a cheap email API like Mailgun. All in, I spend <$5/month for hosting/email with 1,000 free subs, and that's more than offset by Ghost not taking a cut of my paid subs.

Yeah, that's for their pro hosting. It almost turned me away from Ghost at first, too, but the self-hosted option is great. It's a little like Wordpress's hosted vs. self-hosted environment.
