There’s always been some saying or belief that software engineers are “inherently lazy” and we tend to build software to automate away challenges. I see this person doing no different. My hopes is that this new wave of engineers becomes more attuned to the real problems that need solving.

i actually do think a lot of day to day software dev can be automated and vibecoded or whatever, but that only reduces the incentives for learning how to debug edge cases and design properly, and tbh i still doubt you can vibecode your way around some problems without very deliberate manual control

It will never make "better" coders. After you ignore the environmental impact and rampant intellectual property theft, you still need to understand why something doesnt work when it fails.

Were going to be left with an industry of rapidly aging senior engineers and prompt jockeys.

And we all know code reviews are hard. Senior devs don't all make good code reviewers. So if people think it will be easier, and less error prone, to be doing code reviews of genAI generated code then think again.

I have noticed a kind of graying out of my knowledge of a code base as I use more vibe coding and AI in general. Since I am doing physically less there seems to be less signals for for the brain to build a structure or map of what’s where.

AI tools are really good help, when you know your stuff and use them as assistance.

But if you don't know your stuff and rely fully on those... Well, it won't work very well very long.

Wholeheartedly agree. The vibecoding is no good if you don't truly follow what its proposing in it's code solutions. Having some knowledge of it helps one stay in the loop and better recognise where suggestions are wrong or could introduce bugs down the road.
