I've been wondering this as well -- I mostly use Zoom these days, but on the rare occasion that you need to dial an actual phone number, I don't know of any apps that would let you do that

thanks, yeah, i'm mostly on zoom, too, but i frequently interview (usually older) people where even zoom requires tech support & pretty much the only way i can interview them is if i can just call them on the regular phone like a normal person at an unspecified time.

We have converted to Zoom phone at our office. Desktop phones are gone and all calls are done through the Zoom app, just dialing a normal phone number like a normal call. If you can do what you need through a traditional Zoom video call, you might be able to do the same through a Zoom phone add on?

i am hesitant to use in-phone recording because there's no way to check mid-call to make sure it's still recording (& when i previously did use an in-phone app, i lost at least one important interview because it failed to upload to the cloud).

Yeah, iPhone has NOT worked that out yet (the saving or transcribing), at least for longer interviews. I only need the audio for research so I record everything on speaker with a second phone recording a voice memo.

if anybody's following along: zoom phone recording works well enough, but (unlike skype & zoom video) only outputs as mp3 & doesn't offer an option to separate participants into different audio tracks, which is a bummer.

I made the same switch to zoom phone. If you record the call with audio hijack you can get each channel separated.

thanks for this info, I haven't had to do a chat w/anyone who needed to use a phone in a while but Skype was invaluable for that, glad Zoom can do it even in a limited capacity

I never used it, but Microsoft Teams indicates you can dial out:

I don't know if Teams can do multiple channels, but Audio Hijack on Mac can do all kinds of audio routing, which might help.

yeah, i use teams for other work stuff & it's been so completely/consistently unreliable over the past 5 years that i absolutely don't want to use it for interviews. it's already stressful even just to use it for a regular meeting, let alone one i need to record.

yes, i use zoom for many things, but the first part of my question is equally important -- you can't make outgoing calls on zoom, which is the key factor for me.

Zoom Meetings does have a way to dial out to regular phones. Launch Zoom call, go to Participants, Invite and select Dial Out:
