I genuinely can’t conceive how much money you have to be earning to think that a £16.5k yurt for a weekend at Glastonbury seems like a reasonable treat.

you'd have to see the spectacle that is Bougie Glastonbury to understand it...and even then it might be wild. It's essentially Burning Man for rich people; often ankle deep in mud.

Growing up I had mates who lived close so there were always free or reasonably priced tickets and obvs it was not a particular challenge to get under the fence.

Understand why the security and evolution but it lost something in the process.

I know a few people who used to work at a higher level for the festival for years and tellingly they don't go anymore.

For the average punter it's still a great festival of course. So much beyond all the headline main stage stuff.

I would have more sympathy if it wasn't for the fact that (a) these were people buying hospitality tickets and (b) having volunteered at Glasto many times, nearly all of my negative experiences with customers have been people with hospitality tickets. They're just dreadful people.

Hospitality tickets always struck me as a racket initiated by the festival to relieve the dimwitted moneyed classes of their cash in return for very little real extra benefit. I mean, fair play, someone has to subsidise my nice time, may as well be them.

Was talking to a mate about this last night, she's been going since she was a baby. Said the scales fell from her eyes in 1994 when she met a school friend backstage and asked her how she had a hospitality band and she just looked confused and said "my mum bought them"

This was my first thought. But the clue should have been that they couldn't accept credit cards, presumably because Visa were afraid they'd do a flit and people would be able to claim refunds.
Definitely something dodgy going on there.

But you don’t need permission from Visa to get a SumUp machine or similar. Anyone can do it. Perhaps they just didn’t want to pay the credit card fees. Or perhaps they didn’t want the possibility of customers clawing their money back… 🤔

Oh, I'm sure it's the clawback thing. I'm surprised there are so few controls, because some financial institution is legally on the hook for CC fraud. And maybe it was the charges, but again if you can't afford £300 when you're charging 10 grand, your business model is inexplicably marginal.

The fact that they didn't accept any form of payment that included any protection or insurance ought to have been a colossal red flag. You have to wonder what due diligence the festival organisers did to allow them to operate

I don’t get the impression they had anything to do with the festival officially. I think from the stories that the super rich yurt camp was planned in a neighbouring farmer’s field and they hadn’t even bought tickets.

I am thinking - wrongly and in a mean spirit but with some amusement - that the BBC will be in a panic about how to accommodate their army of staff covering the event. (They should cover Download and Wacken instead IMH(biased)O.)
