I personally think Material peaked at version 2 then went downhill from there.
Material 3 shuffled all conventions just for the sake of it then got at least 2 major updates to make it more and more confusing. Now there are too many color roles and I can never remember their purpose.

One was amazing, imitating physics! Asking designers about elevation instead of everyone building stupid custom shadows, was great for developers. I was very disappointed that they give up on that and they lost me as developers supporting them with that
