The prices pharmaceutical companies charge is orders of magnitude higher in the USA, because they can lobby the US Government to make it so. No other country would stand for it. So, the US citizens suffer. Many of the pharma companies are not even US companies.
We can go all the way back to 1909 and thank the robber barons, especially John D. Rockefeller, for laying the groundwork for that. He essentially destroyed holistic and natural medicine in favor of pharmaceutical drugs. Oligarchs who prey on We the People for their pelf are the bane of humanity.
My biggest issue with it is that I was concerned republicans would use universal healthcare to effectively ban healthcare they think is wrong (abortion, gender affirming care, etc.)
But it's not going great without it either. So whatever!
I mean the people who think that’s a bad thing because they don’t see the difference between democratic socialism (Scandinavia) and communist dictatorship is the biggest issue.
Stats: most people avoid seeking medical care. Imagine spending 2 weeks in a hospital, which could cost you millions of dollars. 1 in 3 GoFundMe campaigns are dedicated to paying medical bills.
If you’re in the USA, they mainly go to the corporate healthcare companies that don’t pass on the benefits to the taxpayers and instead increase their profits year over year for the shareholders. The taxpayers, unless you’re a VA, are screwed by these parasitic middlemen “healthcare” corporations.
I'm from Canada and find this to be insane. A few years back I needed urgent gall bladder surgery. They had me on the operating table within a week, and didn't pay a cent. Wild.
Could it be that the combination of a terrible diet, an emphasis on fats and salt and booze plus awful health care results in an abundance of years spent ill and feeling awful?
European culture is more alcohol driven but less to excess. Addiction is treated with positive treatment that’s more likely to stick than here. The biggest problem between here and there is additives especially HFC.
I'm fairly certain you can identify plenty of European countries ingesting too much fat, salt and booze with better life expectancy. Americans didn't invent cured meat or beer.
Most European countries don’t have food deserts. They don’t have Texas sized portions. They don’t eat nearly as much processed food.
And all of them have some sort of funded healthcare which means they go to a dr when they start feeling unwell… they don’t wait it out for another couple years.
It's the land use & no public option of healthcare which prioritizes pre-emptive care. We only go to the doctors as a last resort instead of for regular checkups. Our built environment prioritizes driving over walking. On avg city dwellers have a lower obesity rate than rural folks
As a European who's studied and lived in other European countries, I can say this is a fair description.
I can also say that each time I go to the US, I feel a bit sick the first days as the food is too fat and too salty.. and I pray that I won't get sick and be subjected to US "heatlhcare" costs
Yes. I’ve never lived in Europe, but there’s absolutely no question that the food eaten by the vast majority of Americans is utter garbage - over-processed, low on nutrients, high on sugar/fat/chemicals.
And a lambo is a great car but if you can’t afford one, the fact is irrelevant.
If healthcare is inaccessible to the masses, it’s awful. Doesn’t matter how great it is. It’s actually insulting to know that healthcare is really good, but not for everyone.
Break the medical monopoly allow us to negotiate prices , cap profit margins to something reasonable, this inability to do this makes all of us poorer and wastes resources for our future
That’s the goal. Working as planned. Dependency on a system that is designed to keep people sick and dependent on an employer and insurer who are not looking out for them.
Worked for a hospital, got COVID, got complications. Sick so long I went unpaid. They couldn't be arsed to figure out what was wrong w/me, said "Have you considered going to Mayo?" as if I didn't work at the only place covered. Quit to get diff insurance, in the end they sent me to collections 6x.
I work in regulation and it still shocks me how somethings are thrown around in US foods we wouldn't even consider over here. Money talks. Profits over people.
This⬆️ The way the corporate food oligarchy chemically manipulate fast and processed foods to activate the same addiction centers in the brain as heroin.
And if you get really sick, and all of your sick and vacation days are used up you no longer have a job or insurance. They of course offer you cobra which 🤣 you now can't afford because you don't have a Job! How do I know? Cancer.
My mother in law's significant other was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Had to stop working, lost insurance, took months to get Medicare. Even if he miraculously survived he must be so deep in medical debt, what is there to look forward too?
Who’s up as Sec of HHS, someone who will have a much more detrimental effect on the your health care. Someone who doesn’t believe in vaccines. Welcome back to the 50’s where polio, measles and mumps were rampant. Caught measles @age 5 lucky to have escaped its ravages. Kids are no longer that lucky.
I have been witnessing my generation live a shorter life expectancy than our parents for the 1st time in this country's history.
I've lost around 17 friends and family in just the past 6ish years, the youngest being my 33yo brother 2 years ago.
They're LITERALLY poisoning us and working us to DEATH
That is terrible! I’m so sorry for your lost friends and family. Yet we are the greatest country! What a crock! It is more and more apparent that money for the rich is the only thing they consider important, they consider human lives replaceable. I’m very afraid with Felon 47 it will get worse.
I'm confident it will get worse...I just saw something about Leon skum posting a video about how we need to experience some kind of culling event in order to be successful 🤦🏻
My mother, grandmother an a aunt lived to be in their nineties. One grandfather very late eighties. The one thing they had in common was they stayed active for most of their lives.
2/2 cancer, 48 yo friend from COPD, 61 yo friend from untreated diabetes and hypertension(he couldn't afford it and had no insurance), 51 yo childhood friend died in her sleep from heart issues...all except my mother were in the past 5ish years...not including the myriad of friends I've lost to ODs
My grandmother will be 91 in March...she's watched her/my family become decimated...my mom unalived herself on my bday in '06..never met bio dad..colon polyp got my best friend, coz unalived himself at 52, 42 yo coz died from brain aneurism, 32yo bro caught a fentanyl OD, 58yo friend from lung 1/2
One of the first things I noticed moving from the US to the UK was that older adults seemed far more active in the UK -- and we're active at much older ages.
Yes, the party that has continuously enabled corporatism for the last half century and somehow convinced the working people of this country that it is the best thing for them.
Sounds about right. We can’t get to this place because idiots would rather own the libs and give tax cuts to billionaires that have enough to cover any big medical service! We consistently vote against are own interest because the fear of socialism and owning the libs! We will never get to that place
lies damn lies and statistics. SOME americans are in good health and will live long and happy lives.
Take out the top 10% of earners and the numbers look bad.
Take out the top 20% and the numbers look awful.
Take out the top 50% and america looks like a third world country
It's the miracle of the free market as applied to health care! Americans spend twice a much per patient as more advanced civilized nations spend, and we get much shorter lifespans and medical bankruptcies all in exchange for flushing our precious health care dollars down the golden profit toilet.
Could it be that because of their privatised health service they're more inclined to be habitual pill poppers having medication pushed on them by doctors who are in the pocket of big pharma?
Many Americans have a traditional and negative perspective about health. I practice Alternative Health Care in my own life and with my clients and students giving them a much more positive perspective on health.
Canada's universal health care system is looking pretty good about now. I love it and can't imagine living in the U.S. .
The fact remains that no civilized country still uses the primitive pay for health or die model. We realized a healthy society is a happy and productive one.
I researched the Canadian model, and I must admit it's light years ahead of the garbage system we have here in the U.S.
I'm sure it also boggles some people's minds on how it is we have so many quality hospitals here, but such a trash system as far as how it's funded and provided to people
We have a system that works it isn’t perfect . . . We have had an influx of people without the in frastructure to support the people in the community . . .
Yes we can thank Tommy Douglas I am certain he is the Canadian politician who made this happen it is a bit overburdened right now many don’t have doctors . . . It is a bit sick but we have had an influx of people without the infrastructure in place to help them . . .
A weaponized health industry. Health care is paid for in large part by insurance, which is corrupt. Masses of people go under financially or die needlessly. The survivors who are riddled with debt are at the mercy of creditors, who are backed by the power of the state. Lots of casualties there.
I agree. What’s happening in Louisiana regards vaccine is the beginning of a new kind of negligence, which I have no doubt will spread through all the red states.
Every aspect of our society is an opportunity to skim something off the top. Nothing is off limits. We have let them dismantle a nearly a century of institutions that we have worked so hard to build.
Big Pharma likes it when you think you are sick and will spend a lot of their advertising revenue reminding you just how sick you should be feeling and that they have a pill for it.
iirc the US and Europe have pretty identical ingredients in our food. The main difference (besides free healthcare) is that sedentary/unhealthy lifestyles are heavily encouraged here in America. Our cities aren't walkable, healthy food is too expensive for the lower class, et cetera, et cetera.
Says a lot about our capitalist system and how it values its citizens (aka worker drones). It makes me wonder if Elon will be as pro reproduction as they perfect robots and AI to do the work we do?
Could have something to do with the shitty healthcare, constant exposure to plastics, overuse of pesticides, and lack of enfoced environmental regulations.
Whe the same shitty healthcare spend all their time and money on patented treatments, no cures or wellness.
That's pretty damning.
Just think all that money spent on health could be more productively spent if the USA had some sort of European style health service.. People would have more money in their pocket, more business opportunities, growth and health.
That would make America great again
Yes, we spend more and lower life expectancy. And then add that most don't live to retire. Republicans know that. That's why they reduced the amount of money that companies have to pay for pensions. It is because of lack of health care. They just want to steal our Social Security money also.
Our health system is reactionary. Many Dr's skipped a finger exam so I went around with Prostate Cancer for years and went metastatic. One said the excuse was the exam would only detect cancer 15-20% of the time. But with me it would've been 100% because of where the tumor was. They didn't care.
Living longer means little if those years are spent unwell. This study is a wake-up call to prioritize prevention and wellness—better nutrition, access to healthcare, and active lifestyles. Small changes now can add vitality to our future. Your health is your wealth. 🌱
This is my take on this data. Life expectancy includes younger people including infants and so, the expected life can fluctuate significantly. My take on this is 1. Sick people are living longer in US (possibly good news) 2. May be they get sick at younger age (possibly bad news). Need more info.
What good is living long if you can’t enjoy a cheeseburger without worrying about your cholesterol? Let’s aim for quality over quantity—because who wants to spend their golden years feeling like a rusty old car?
It’s so hard. Then when you do eat well you read articles about how the soil is either poisoned or far less nutritive than it used to be and fresh food is hard to access or bred to look pretty at the store and nothing else and you just want to throw up your hands in frustration.
Yes! I am guilty as well (being a canadian) In the last few months been doing a lot better though, have snuck in the odd treat & had idgaf days. Canada is just as bad as the US even if we have good healthcare coverage. It's a business the gov pays for in our case & taxes us to pay for it for "free"
You have an exceptional system compared to the U.S. my best friend (who became a citizen there 10 yrs ago) gets once a month massages. When her husband needed emergency surgery, he didn’t jump through any hoops to get it. Count your blessings. We would gladly pay a tax for universal health care.
Those are some upsides, but there are a lot of downsides as well the average person doesn't see. I mostly meant the food system is messed up, and it contributes to the poor health cycle. 😔
I argue, however, due to the price of food, especially healthy food. Poorer individuals (who are also pressed for time) are unfairly burdened by both agencies.
Down to poor education from a serious lack of life building blocks at a young age. How does the richest country in the world sit at #54 in education. Sad really !!
It would seem the care we get is aimed at keeping us alive but not cured. We get to use up many more dollar$ in pharmaceuticals that way. How many "cures" are out there really? But lots and lots of "maintenance" drugs. Think on it. 🤔😒
Curious how this looks after EPA, FDA, USDA, etc. are gutted. Not tomention I fully expect healthcare and insurance to both goup in price and down in quality in the near future. It will certainly be a wild ride.
Unfortunately, unless it's an N95 mask, the mask only prevents you from spreading anything you have to others and not the other way around. Still a good thing to do tho.
Not sure if you're saying that for the benefit of those reading the thread who might not know or if you're assuming that the person who posted about continually masking doesn't know about N95 efficacy.
Masks also work much better to prevent you getting others sick than vice versa. This is what infuriates me about the anti-maskers, the pure selfishness.
I have immune issues.
My take at the time was, "these people are more willing to accidentally kill a stranger or their loved ones than put up with the mild discomfort of wearing a mask."
KN95s are pretty good too. I wear them and switch to N95s, depending on the activity and conditions. Most masks offer some type of protection. It just decreases depending on the quality. Many Americans can't afford high quality masks. They should use what they can.
That's why wearing a mask but simultaneously cuddling with strangers is dumb as fuck. Remember the high time when people where mass cuddling in the store and then wondering that the masks don't work 🤣😂🤣 just keep your distance for christs sake
Here in Germany at least, everybody kept standing in the middle of the way, and standing closer to each other than ever before. Fricking stupid behaviors of dumb apes.
You underestimate how people treat you with a mask on, for the most part unless you meet an annoying anti-masker, most people understand that you either are sick or don’t wanna be sick and will be a little more careful/keep their distance
I get sick easily and work around kids so I mask up at work
Yeah, that tracks. Supply and demand. They were very in-demand during the pandemic. I heard it was so bad that some factories that produced other products had to switch to masks to keep up with the demand. It's been a while tho, so I can't confirm it for certain.
Eugh. I'm sorry to hear that, I hope all goes well for you. I'm lucky enough to have a good immune system, but I wore a mask as much as possible. I lived in a small town at the time and regularly had to listen to people spouting far-right conspiracy theories saying covid wasn't real -_-
#1 KILLER OF CHILDREN & TEENS!! GUNS!! We have to do something! We have to elect people that believe in common sense gun laws.!.!

Showing you my newest novel (#10) because you're in the #BanAssaultWeapons thread. I HEARD YOU PAINT COWBOYS releases 4/3. Heavily anti-gun lobby & anti-assault-style weapons thriller. Would love if more people knew about it. https://bit.ly/PaintCowboys
I wonder how much of it stems from chronic conditions that are an outgrowth of "toughing it out" and working while being sick and/or forgoing preventative treatment because shit's expensive?
I have multiple chronic health conditions and have been to one of the top hospitals in the county and think our healthcare here is a freaking joke! Many other people who live with chronic health conditions will agree with me that our healthcare in the states sucks!
I suspect we will see the average lifespan of women in the US begin to drop as states implement draconian anti-abortion policies. Maternal mortality rates are already going up.
We're on par with Poland in terms of life expectancy according to your chart.
Freaking Slovenia is beating us.
Note also that the poor die way earlier than the well-heeled:
Mostly unforced errors. Too much sitting, not enough activity/exercise. Too much processed food, not enough home cooking. Heart rates not going up, booze, cigarettes. Many vices. The path of righteousness is there but it requires work. Work is hard, but it’s wise to exchange sweat for longer life.
The pharmaceutical first advertise all the reasons you may need their drugs and then when you suffer side effects they have more drugs for you. Keeping you sick is keeping them rich.
Stress is a motherf*cker. People finding solutions to hurt themselves to survive day by day is heartbreaking. My deepest sympathies for the loved ones we have all lost ❤️
Having seen the food in American programmes, I'd really struggle to eat if I visited...it all looks gross, the portions massive and the contents look suspicious
I mean we add unnecessary food dyes to make things ✨look✨ appealing though we know it causes massive harm to our bodies… and that’s just a teeny tiny example.
Why share paywall articles? We cant pay every goddamned news service and opinion page that comes down the feed with info that seeks to grab our attention. Why fish for readers who arent allowed to read it without paying money to do so?
We drive everywhere. Eat crap.
Working in fitness centers I noticed active old ppl did well and then crashed & died in a few weeks or months. Inactive ppl just are drawing out their death with illnesses and doctor's visits.

Theres a reason many Americans feel so damned unhealthy- and food is one part of it.
If healthcare is inaccessible to the masses, it’s awful. Doesn’t matter how great it is. It’s actually insulting to know that healthcare is really good, but not for everyone.

The USA life expectancy actually when lower in the last poll
You literally pay more for far less
people want the freedom to eat what they want, instead of demanding food manufacturers stop make bad food taste good.
Either way, great tip! Thanks for sharing.
It's been a bit since I've read, so my knowledge could just be outdated.
This is a news article and not the original study, but there are two of them out there I might try to dig up.
