It's not a Roman solute. The gesture was made famous as a "Roman solute" in movies like Ben-Hur but there's no actual historical account that Romans actually did this. It's grade-A bullshit.
It was an invention around the time of the French Revolution. Painters of the time used it in artworks depicting people from the Roman republican era. Like fasces it was meant as a symbol for republican forms of government that was co-opted later.
I regret to inform you (my family is Hindu) that plenty of Hindu swastikas are placed at 45s & the Nazis used 90 deg swastikas all the time. The direction of the arms doesn’t tell you anything either, both are used in Hinduism (& the one with the same orientation as the Nazi one is more common).
Right!? I hadn't heard of it before, so I had a quick google and the Wikipedia page states that it's a fascist salute pretty early on (although they could be clearer about the fact that it's the same one the nazis then adapted).
Next the chuds will break out the swastika again and be like, “it’s not a swastika! It’s Buddhist” as they march through the streets with the swastika.
Don't even engage with these bad faith fascists in semantics. Wasting your time is a deliberate tactic they have always used. Direct action gets the goods
Nah I know mate, I wasn't saying you were directly engaging with some Nazi. Just that even entertaining the "discourse" around what the Nazi salute really meant or is called with people who are just lying through their teeth is a net loss
I wonder what would happen if I did this "Roman salute" in public or in front of a cop or something. Maybe I can get a bunch of friends together and we can film ourselves "Roman Saluting" and post it on Facebook. I'm sure we wouldn't get banned or anything. It's simply a harmless gesture, amirite?
elon musk hitting the gamer salute is only the latest phase of an experiment to see how much damage we could do to western society by giving an 8chan weirdo four hundred billion dollars
What is historically known as the Roman Salute has been around for millennia. It was used by the Romans, was the original gesture for reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and is still used today by the Catholic Church for blessings by the priest and congregation.
The Roman Salute was the same salute that Benito Mussolini co-opted for his fascist regime. The Nazis appropriated that with some minor gestural modifications.
The Roman empire is only such a big deal because they were white. The Mongol empire was almost 3 times as large as Rome during its peak!

If it happens, we gotta get this guy up there to take care of it.
😄
Throw on a red polo shirt and some black khakis and those Nazi bastards won't know the difference.
But as you say, it doesn't even matter. Chaplin had that moustache first but grow one and see how many people call it a Chaplin moustache
