The borzoi I knew long ago was often mistaken for an Afghan hound. Once when a guy asked, for fun I told him that the dog was an Afghan hound. I wonder if he ever lost a bet or a trivia question because of me.
A similar breed, the saluki, doesn't have the curly hair
We had 5: Riga & Rasputin were borzois; Yonti & Tommy were salukis; we then later took on an extra tall one due to disease, but I don't recall the name, he was young
My grandmother bred and showed borzoi. She took such pride in her dogs! I grew up around them and always loved how they were couch potatoes the size of a miniature horse. Huge, sweet, and hairy af.
