Did you see the straight to video sequel “The Ranger”? Good shit. Dude in post apocalypse Yosemite finds an old park ranger uniform, dons it, and kills everyone who tries to farm for lumber.
I had no idea. As an avid lover (seriously thought my dad and I the only people on earth who love it) of the Great Film since it was released in theatres I am ashamed that I did not know this. You’ve made my day. Looking for this book now.
i told the guy at my local usps office that I was into vintage sewing machines and he called up his wife right then and there to ask her if she still had that old sewing machine she could give me, as I protested and asked that he not, lol.
also, my brother is a mailman, and he's great.
I don’t think people truly appreciate the effect that the post office has had on the overall growth of our economy and how they enabled commerce to grow in this country. Without the post office, delivery of invoices would have been a nightmare, getting paid would been impossible.
people who live in areas with even modest population density really take for granted how incredible the post office is, and how challenging end to end delivery is in very rural areas. the postal service is one of the greatest marvels in history
I would have agreed in 2023 but a couple years inside this hideous, abusive meatgrinder has changed my mind. Put Kevin Costner in brown and give him a teamsters card imo
As a letter carrier delivering in a conservative heavy area knowing the vast majority of my customers voted for an administration that wants to kill my career, thank you. Reading things like this helps me keep going.
Which is crazy. I’m in an industry where older folks exclusively use mail for payments/applications/questionnaires and they refuse to use email. And yet, they’ll go ballistic if a piece of mail is not delivered or a payment isn’t received
Some gal was hassling the workers there the other week, understandably frustrated, and the rote apology from the desk guy broke my heart. I wanted to tell her they're intentionally being short staffed to eliminate the post office but what's the point anymore.
I just want my gay friends to be able to get married, smoke pot, and have universal health care. That and I just want to be left alone to garden , I don't think I'm asking for a lot here 🤷🏼♀️. Obviously, my request is a bit more detailed, but you get the basics
I don't know how these things work in the US but in a general sense I would rank libraries and fire departments equally to those institutions. I imagine they are probably municipal, but around here they're still governmental.
As a writer and horsewoman, I greatly appreciate that Anthony Trollope worked for the post office and used plotting out British postal routes as a means for conditioning his fox hunting horses. And then there's the Pony Express....
Those are two of the best ones but I'd have to throw in libraries too, a place full of stuff to learn and do where nobody is trying to make money off of you, you can just go there. Libraries are one of the coolest things in the modern world.
My grandfather's patent to sort the mail via barcode was stolen by the USPS & then the big box companies. I have the paper work and hearing transcripts. If there was a way to use this information to protect the post office please let me know how
Forgive the cold call! It's heartening to see such love for the post office so I had to jump in. You or folks who follow you might be interested in hosting a Hands Off USPS teach-in in your community, or telling people about this project if the P.O. comes up in conversation
My last experience was annoying and time consuming as hell (fully not their fault), but concluded with the person at the desk complimenting my shirt and telling me he was pretty sure the photo was taken outside his old haunt CBGBs.
My grandfather, his father, and his brother were all postal workers and I think that helped shaped why my dad's side has few if any relatives I'm embarrassed of.
I got genuinely emotional the first time I looked up at the “neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor hail” inscription on the old grand and *massive* USPS building on 34th in Manhattan.
And not for nothing, Tom Petty is in that movie. He's not a good actor or anything. He doesn't really do much. It's still Tom Petty, though. Last time I checked, Tom Petty is pretty good.
i mean the difference here is that what i am expressing is a personal desire for how I want to live my life not desire for how I want to change the rest of the world. i vote regularly to increase taxes on myself to support government services i will not use because that's what being in a society is

Very, very good book, complete with a subplot about a woman death squad committed to killing all the shitty men

It's not 'shooting a lot of people' it's 'Let's rebuild the mail system'.
Everything is order.
There are no Nazis to contend with.
Oh, and I always say “thank you for your service to this country” because they are the real heroes.
Sophie also has to cameo from a fortress where she is hiding after her USDA related rampage
But instead we’re just the capitalism hellscape reality
😭
