five miles in 46 minutes barefoot for the first time in a little while. let go of my cardio for a bit due to just, everything, but I'm back in the saddle and feeling OK for 37.

Ngl as an avid runner I've never thought to try barefoot in my city, with how much broken glass I've seen on my routes I'd be a bit nervous but maybe I'll just send it my next run lol, but that's sick! 9:00 pace is fantastic!
Find a grass soccer field or something and try running a couple of laps at your normal running pace, then see how you feel the next day. If you've always run in shoes, a lot of different muscles and tendons are suddenly going to come into play, and it's super easy to break stuff if you go too hard
Rebuilding sucks. Started running at 35 (was VERY out of shape) got to the point of running half marathons weekly very comfortably and a few 50ks a season to just now getting back from injury for the better part of a year, iβm 47 and am happy to be back to 3-4 5ks/wk. itβll be a long road backβ¦
It super does. Injuries (ITBS mostly) + hormones tanking + a more sedentary job = hecking out of shape and I miss that mojo I had 5 yrs ago. Its improving w/some exogenous hormones but I'm so behind where I was. I accepted a 10k is about it unless I become a walker.
FWIW I had ITBS and it did go away eventually. This was before running ultras. Also had a torn meniscus plus surgery and bounced back. Itβs frustrating but you can make it back eventually!
Oy motherfucker, everythings gotta remind me I've been postponing getting back into running for months, doesn't it. Fuck, it's so easy to keep running once you've run for like two weeks, and so hard to make yourself start again.
I'm working on getting up to five miles, period. I just started running again--only on a treadmill, because fuck the south's humidity--and shit's rough.
I'm also, uh, a bit older than 37. So there's that.
Barefoot is the way though. I can't stand regular shoes anymore.
I'd say consistency is better than arbitrary numbers. A short run is better than no run. For building "good" habits, reinforcing the habit and not putting a set goal on what you need to achieve to "meet" the goal is a better outlook. (read Atomic Habits!)
back in my 20s I'd do 60 plus miles a week barefoot. my PB was 118. But I didn't do much strength training back then, on the whole feeling a lot stronger now.
As a fellow old (42)... do dynamic warmups before going for speed, and keep up on strength training. also keep some rest/recovery days in there. injuries show up randomly and love to linger.
Turning 37 in 2 wks. I know so much more about how to strengthen to avoid injury now and with a bit of effort feel like a tank generally.
I never ran in my 20s, but developed a bit of a habit last summer. Finding myself getting antsy and breaking into a run for fun like I'm a kid again, it's great.
Not to be a parasocial creep, but I think I started running last summer partially because I saw a tweet of yours that said something like you recommend cardio to people with PTSD. Calmed my brain down quite a bit, so thanks. It's a pleasure to exist on the same timeline as you.
This is good and also impressive but rn for some reason I am reeling more from the fresh knowledge that Iβm 5 yrs older than you. Can you keep that to yrself please next time
Barefoot on a trail or paved road? I sometimes find issues with my running shoes and wonder if barefoot would be better but then I also fear getting hurt because of something I step on.
i have these fucked up patellar tendons that get ornery if i push them too hard. i stopped training for speed this year as a result and do a most of my runs at like 10-11 min/mile, only going faster at organized races. the damndest thing is i'm racing faster now despite training slow
I'm 37 and I'm absolutely certain that a 5 mile march would kill me stone dead.
I got heart issues that I can't afford to get treated. I could just fall dead in my tracks at any moment. Lol. The "family flaw" from my mother's side. Both uncles hearts exploded at 44 and 46.

Your Future 50+ self is going to appreciate it..
Trust me on this...
time I was in shape, I was 36. That was long ago
when you've done marathons on the streets of Okinawa which are made of ground coral nothing much hurts anymore
Squatting I usually max at sets of six at 340
so nothing crazy, I was doing more a year and a half back and hurt myself so i am a lot more cautious now
i also wear minimalist shoes regularly but today was nothing
I switched to minimalist shoes recently and thatβs as tough as I think Iβm gonna get.
Finding the lifting/running balance is maybe my biggest challenge in life. Yes, I AM incredibly privileged!

Robert seems to have lived 15 amazing lives and yet somehowβ¦5 years younger than me which is rude!
Maybe not the adventures of previous years, but a hell of a lot more than most!
Iβm truly here for cat and baby goat content anyway. And the podcasts, I guess
Granted I'm a couple years older, but still.
I'm about to get even slower because Texas summer means temperature regulation breaks
