I am reading that New Yorker profile of Curtis Yarvin and I cannot overemphasize how much he is a stupid person's idea of what a smart person sounds like. I resent having to know who this man is. I wish to wipe him from my memory.

As bad as he is, the people who admire him and give him status instead of ridicule are Peter Thiel, JD Vance, et al and that should be setting red flags all over
The meme of Donald as king is having the effect to normalize the idea
I loved that book. When I would drive from New Orleans to Baton Rouge I always quoted.
“The only excursion of my life outside of New Orleans took me through the vortex to the whirlpool of despair: Baton Rouge. . .
Yes, I'm also not sure how much the author meant it as a cautionary tale (iirc it was published after his death), but as Rationalwiki (not affiliated with the 'SV Rationalists' who tend to be more pro Yarvin) noted, some of their ideas match.
100%. His reading of historical events is so laughably implausible, at odds with all respected historians who have done the actual deep research. He's another case of marketing hype used to paper over a product's inferiority.
Beyond the idiocy of his philosophy, he's just the worst writer.
it's on par with the dreck you see in spree shooter manifestos: whiny, self-aggrandizing pseudo-philosophy about how the world would be better if he and his bros were in charge. Just pathetic anyone treats his as a thought leader.
I’m mostly mad I missed the window to get to SV and bamboozle all the rich people with the type of nonsense a high college freshman spouts off when no one wants to go to a party with him. It’s a recurring cycle, but need a little space before we can launch the next iteration of tech Scientology
When I was younger, I used to fantasize about how cool it would be to be a public intellectual, but I doubted that I would ever be smart enough to do so. Alas, only now have I realized that I am not stupid enough.
I don’t think I have the patience to wait through the New Yorker article. Does it give enough information on how to trip up his personality so he collapses and on himself?
The way they typified so-called “gifted child syndrome” as “getting head pats” seemed wrong. In my experience, it usually manifests as.. whatever he’s been doing. Self-proclaimed expertise after only having a cursory look into things
I find this particularly cringe because I was like this until my mid-twenties, when I finally figured out that I needed to learn to try hard and to be bad at things.
I knew Curtis Yarvin in college. He is smart but only to a point. His self-assessment of his own intelligence is so far inflated beyond reality that it becomes an intellectual debility in itself.
The latter. Yet he does not provide answers to a simple question: if they are the universal solution, why don't companies simply hire them to be CEOs? And while we're at it: if having a state run as a company is such a genius idea, what about those multiple companies that went bankrupt?
What are your criteria for deciding someone is smart? I am not doubting your assessment according to your own criteria. I’m just wondering what the criteria are.
I’m not trying to be snarky here. It’s just from what I can see publicly there isn’t a lot of evidence of actual smartness. So you must’ve seen something that doesn’t make it to the media or have a different set of criteria than I do.

Blogger: At long last, I have become Ignatius J. Reilly from classic novel A Confederacy of Dunces
“The only excursion of my life outside of New Orleans took me through the vortex to the whirlpool of despair: Baton Rouge. . .
I always took a picture of Ignatius J. Reilly statue when on canal.
That these mags give these people a voice is ridiculous.
